In 1987, the Palo Alto Second Ward in the Menlo Park Stake noticed the sentiment in the community that Mormons were not Christians, and they wanted to do something about it. Drawing on a tradition a ward member had experienced in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the Palo Alto Saints decided to create their own display of nativity, or crèche, scenes. We didn’t set out to study spiritual gifts when we began our research on the zookeeping profession several years ago. We are management professors interested in how people find meaning in their work. But our study of zookeepers provided some surprising—and inspiring—examples of spiritual gifts in action. The things we learned in our scholarship reverberated with spiritual truth and provided some powerful insights into how we can discover and enact our spiritual gifts.
This lesson directly challenges our mind set about how we think of Christ. We need to think about how we really feel about him, how central his role is in our lives, and what our worship of him really does for us. These are just a few of the things this thought-provoking lesson asks us to consider.
