Two special pre-conference events have been arranged for those attending the Southwest Liturgical Conference, scheduled for Feb. 2-5 at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City: a tour of Temple Square that will include a question-and-answer with a Mormon Tabernacle Choir organist and choir director, and a composer spotlight featuring David Kauffman and William Gokelman, whose "Mass of Renewal" took first place at the National Association of Pastoral Musicians contest.
In a recent Facebook post, Elder Renlund shared 1 Corinthians 11:11 and discussed the importance of one question he says ". . . each husband and wife would benefit from pondering." He wrote:
For too long, the 10-foot-high pieces of artwork illustrating the parallels between the lives of Moses and Christ were literally in the dark. Until the soot from centuries of burning candles could be cleaned off and the treasures created by a team of Renaissance fresco artists including Botticelli, Rosselli, Signorelli, Ghirlandaio and Perugino could be examined closely, few people recognized the significance of the work on the long walls of the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican.
Alongside Dallin H. Oaks, Catholic Archbishop Charles J. Chaput spoke to many Latter-day Saints, sharing the important reason Mormons and Catholics need and can support one another in our fight for religious freedom.
For my part, I figured that a) since Mormonism was going to be in the news quite a bit; b) since my job is to cover religion journalism; and c) since I am nobody’s idea of a saint, Latter-day or otherwise; it would be a good idea to grab some firsthand experience with the religion. So one Sunday, unannounced and with notebook in hand and caffeine coursing through my veins, I showed up at the local Mormon ward and occupied a pew. It was a novelty for both of us it seemed—the congregation and me. I had never seen Mormons at worship and they had never had a bona fide journalist plop down and start taking notes.

Many years ago, tracting during my first weeks as a missionary in German-speaking Switzerland, my companion and I were finally admitted into an apartment. The family who lived in it were eastern Europeans, and devoutly Catholic. In fact, it soon became apparent they were unusually devoted to the Virgin Mary; their living room was decorated with several statues and images of the mother of Jesus. They weren't very receptive to our message, and so my companion (a relatively recent convert and — it must be said — a diligent and committed missionary who has since passed away) effectively launched into an attack on Mary.

Remember the Lectures on Faith sections in the Mormon scripture, “Doctrine and Covenants?” No? But they were there for 86 years? I’m reading an 1918 “Doctrine and Covenants” and sure enough, there’s Lectures on Faith.” What about “Section 101″ in early D&C editions, the “Article on Marriage” that says men and women should only have one spouse? No, haven’t heard of that one either? It was eventually deleted by church leaders and replaced by Section 132, which details celestial marriage and having multiple wives. Decanonization of scripture is not talked about much in the LDS church, and it’s certainly far less frequent than examples of added scripture in Mormon canon, but it does happen.
