If you have ever been to Salt Lake City, chances are you have visited the elegant white building on the corner of Main Street and South Temple. First known as the Hotel Utah and now the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, this landmark will celebrate its 100th anniversary this June and now is your chance to share your memories of this grand old building. The Hotel Utah opened on 9 June 1911 and served as a gathering place for national and international visitors alike for the next 76 years. Closed in 1987, it reopened in 1993 as the Joseph Smith Memorial Building after extensive redesign and renovation. Currently, the building welcomes the public to its three restaurants and multiple banquet rooms and provides office space for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Seeing the Light of Christ in a State Prison

I have been able to speak at Utah State Prison 4 times now, (twice on the men’s side, twice on the women’s), and I am forever changed by it. I have been to some really incredible and beautiful places, meeting literally hundreds of great people a day. Tons of different stories and backgrounds and challenges and successes—all that have had some sort of impact on me, and yet when I went to the prison to speak March of 2013 it has still been my absolute favorite place I have ever been. I'll share a little bit of what I wrote in my personal journal in 2013 after my visit to the men’s side:

“Africa has been held in reserve by the Lord,” Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said in an October 2010 visit to Burundi. “Africa will someday be seen as a bright land full of gospel hope and happiness.” Africa is one of the fastest growing areas of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with some 320,000 members, the majority of whom have joined the Church over the past 30 years. They have found that hope and happiness spoken of by Elder Holland by embracing the teachings of Jesus Christ.

I have known my friend Kimberly for over 20 years—we grew up together, my mom was her teacher, her mom babysat me. Kim was a bridesmaid at my wedding and my sister's wedding—she is essentially an adopted part of our family. She is 3 years older than me and has taught me some of the most profound and sacred lessons of my life.
