On June 27, 2002, President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the rebuilt Nauvoo Illinois Temple on the anniversary of the Prophet Joseph Smith’s martyrdom. In his dedicatory prayer, President Hinckley prayed that the temple would “stand as a memorial to him who lived here and was buried here, Joseph Smith, the great prophet of this dispensation, and his brother Hyrum, whom he loved.”
As the Taylorsville Utah Temple groundbreaking began on Halloween morning, the sun was just rising, warming the backs of the handful of attendees. It was a beautiful, crisp October day, complete with blue skies and a few Canada geese flying overhead. People who lived nearby perched on backyard shed roofs to view the proceedings or watched through the chain link fences from a distance as the freeway traffic roared by on one end of the field.
Several temple groundbreakings have taken place over the past two months while others have just been announced. Ground was broken to begin construction of the Syracuse Utah Temple and the Tallahassee Florida Temple in early June while the groundbreaking for the Helena Montana Temple was held on June 26.
INTRODUCTION: On Sunday, March 18, 1958, my father ordained me a Deacon. I received a letter from him that morning, and I kept it for many years. The paper itself has now disappeared, but the memory lingers. Among other things, somehow it was communicated to me that I would be authorized to act in the name of and in the place of God.
