Being a Latter-day Saint in Greece is not easy. Members there endure persecution and discrimination. Some have lost jobs because of their faith. Others have been expelled from school.
In my line of work, I get to read what a lot of people say about my church.
I didn't really know what to expect when I got to Provo, Utah. I knew that many people here were followers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, better known as the Mormons. And I was here to visit Brigham Young University -- also known as the Mormon university. Mitt Romney graduated from here in 1971. I was visiting the school to find out how they viewed their famous alumnus, and if people would vote for him because he was of the same faith -- that report comes next week. For the moment, let me muse on my visit to BYU.
In the course of studying Matthew, we came across the story of the woman who begged to have her daughter healed. Christ told her he couldn’t help her because she wasn’t part of his mission, but she wouldn’t take no for an answer. After proving her faith with a little verbal jousting, Christ gave her what she asked of him. Matthew 15: 27: Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
In my latest column, I wrote about asking our presidential candidates more questions regarding their religious beliefs. Here’s the general questionnaire I sent to the candidates: 1. Is it fair to question presidential candidates about details of their faith? 2. Is it fair to question candidates about controversial remarks made by their pastors, mentors, close associates or thinkers whose books they recommend?
“I believe the challenge to oppose this evil is one from which members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as citizens, cannot shrink.” She said that we must catch a glimpse of who we really are and the power that we have.
A BYU student who suffered critical head injuries last week after being hit by a car just outside the campus boundaries is making remarkable progress.
Like the rich young man who asked Jesus what he should do to inherit eternal life and was told to sell all he had to give to the poor and to follow Jesus, “any disciple of Christ can well ponder the questions ‘Am I obedient and faithful enough? Am I lacking anything?’” Bishop Gérald Caussé said in his address at the 2014 Seminar for New Mission Presidents.
Richie Norton, a new TOFW presenter and author of the book The Power of Starting Something Stupid, shares 15 ways to be happy-or one suggestion from each of the First Presidency and the Twelve. We LOVE it and think it’s one great way to prepare for General Conference!
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can be found at every level of society — in business and charity, education and the sciences, political parties and government, the entertainment industry and news media. Describing the character of Latter-day Saints, Newsweek magazine wrote: “No matter where Mormons live, they find themselves part of a network of mutual concern; in Mormon theology everyone is a minister of a kind, everyone is empowered in some way to do good to others, and to have good done unto them: it is a 21st century covenant of caring. This caring is not limited to Church members alone, but extends far beyond.”
