Church Announces Groundbreaking for First Temple in Portugal

The Church announced Thursday that ground will be broken for the Lisbon Portugal Temple on December 5, 2015, making this temple the first in Portugal. Currently, the Church has temples in 13 countries in Europe and 148 temples operating worldwide. Elder Patrick Kearon, president of the Europe Area, will preside at the services.

Mormon ward is meant to attract, match singles

Being single on a Sunday is hard — just ask anyone of the 60 or so singles that will soon be traveling from around the Eastside area to join the Tiger Mountain Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “We were hearing the same thing from all parts of the country,” explained Robert Johnson, president of the Bellevue South Stake. “It’s hard to concentrate on the message when there you are, single, alone and feeling completely at odds with the families on either side.”

Church Missionaries Provide Cleanup of Historic Site in Cambodia

More than 100 missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints participated in a Christmas service project to help clean the grounds of the Choeung Ek Memorial in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The missionaries from six countries donated 2,000 service hours scrubbing the park’s central monument, parking lots and park entry roads, as well as removing unwanted vegetation from the park’s protective walls.

Mormon documents digitized

Gary Miller, Somerset County register of wills, still can't believe how lucky he is to have had tens of thousands of dollars worth of free work done to preserve the documents in his office at the Somerset County Courthouse. As part of the ongoing genealogical research program by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormon church, a team was assigned to copy the documents in Miller's office. Now, he is waiting for the researchers at the Mormon church's Salt Lake City facility to provide him with the final digitized product.

Traditional family championed at World Congress

The traditional family—father, mother, and children—is in rapid decline, though “children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows,” a Church leader warned at the World Congress of Families held in Madrid on May 25–27 (“The Family: A Proclamation to the World,” Liahona and Ensign, Nov. 2010, 129). Elder Erich W. Kopischke of the Seventy addressed the audience at the opening plenary session of the congress. He was introduced by Sister Mary Ellen Smoot, former Relief Society general president.

Youth across the globe are meeting the challenge of the 2012 Mutual theme — "Arise and shine forth that thy light may be a standard for the nations" (Doctrine and Covenants 115:5) — by offering service to those in need. Such service also helps members of the Aaronic Priesthood realize the goals in the Duty to God Program.Below are a few examples of young men and young women who are giving of themselves and "shining their light" to care for others.

President Boyd K. Packer Dies at Age 90

Boyd K. Packer, president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died at home Friday, July 3, 2015, at about 2 p.m. MDT from causes incident to age. He was 90 years old.
