PROVO — Many scholars believe there's no such thing as perfect Bible translation, yet despite the flaws in the King James Version of the Bible, it remains the version treasured by much of the world, including members of the LDS Church. During a three-day symposium sponsored by BYU in honor of the KJV's 400th anniversary this year, scholars shared insights about the translation's connection with the LDS faith, its historical background, textual distinctions and literary influence. Robert Millet, a professor of ancient scripture in BYU's Religious Education Department, pointed out that because Mormons believe in an open canon, others often suggest that Mormons don't revere the Bible, or have even replaced it with their 'own Bible,' referring to the Book of Mormon.
Across our worldwide Church, children, youth, and adults are studying Matthew 1 and Luke 1, which tells of the miraculous conception of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. Recently, Daniel Smith of Messages of Christ created a video contrasting these two events, a video that highlights the incredible faith and devotion of Mary, the mother of the Son of God. These insights can add depth to our study of the new Come, Follow Me curriculum and our understanding of New Testament events.

If Manti Te'o's career at Notre Dame has seemed like something straight out of a Hollywood script, perhaps it is fitting the linebacker is cast as a underdog in the final two scenes of his collegiate career. First, he will try to become the first defense-only player to win the Heisman Trophy, going up against a couple of quarterbacks Saturday night in Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel and Kansas State's Collin Klein. Next month, he will lead the top-ranked Fighting Irish against defending champion Alabama in the BCS championship game as Notre Dame tries to become the first team since BYU in 1984 to start a season unranked and win it all.
Hundreds of Mormon missionaries assigned to serve in Brazil increasingly find themselves preaching not in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo or Fortaleza, but instead in Philadelphia, Pocatello, Idaho, or even Provo. The LDS Church’s São Paulo Missionary Training Center, which can accommodate up to 700 trainees, currently houses only about 60, none of them U.S. citizens. And the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has lowered the missionary age from 19 to 18 for male Brazilians to make up for the loss of full-time American missionaries.
