Topics surrounding Joseph Smith’s life can sometimes be controversial, and they’re not exactly things we can sidestep on a journey to get to know him. So how do we tackle this complexity hundreds of years after his death? How do we make sense of the moments in Joseph’s life that were sometimes controversial? And how do we become stronger for it? We talked to Heidi’s friends, some of whom are renowned historians, who had these very same questions and learned from their experiences how we might find the answers for ourselves.
The summer of 1978 was a turning point in my life. I’d just graduated from Brigham Young University in broadcast journalism and made a last-minute decision to apply for an internship in New York City — the Y.’s first group of communications students ever to work in the Big Apple as interns. My marriage prospects weren’t too enticing and the job offers weren’t pouring in, so I thought it would be the perfect place to get my feet wet in the industry (other than the TV internship I’d done the previous summer at KSL. INTRODUCTION: On Sunday, March 18, 1958, my father ordained me a Deacon. I received a letter from him that morning, and I kept it for many years. The paper itself has now disappeared, but the memory lingers. Among other things, somehow it was communicated to me that I would be authorized to act in the name of and in the place of God.
Some may remember a story of President Spencer W. Kimball helping a stranded pregnant woman in the airport who was pushing along her young toddler.1 President Kimball comforted the woman, whom he had never met and knew nothing about, gave the little girl a piece of gum, and got the young, pregnant, exhausted mother and her wet and hungry 2-year-old daughter on the next flight out of the Chicago O’Hare airport.
