In the wee hours of the morning when most of the world is still asleep, I work in a bakery with a spunky Peruvian woman in her early forties who never hides what she thinks or feels. One day we were talking and she asked me (even though she knew), “How old are you? 20? 23? Oh no, 25!” I smiled, knowing what was coming next. And it came: “You should be married!”
Editor's note: Our bi-weekly Friday column, “Found in the footnotes,” explores some of the footnotes from remarks given by General Authorities and General Officers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
I think my understanding of how angels help us has been wrong my whole life.
Author’s Note: With this lesson, we come to the end of the Old Testament Manual. A time or two we have strapped on the aqualung and gone deep, but most of the time we have floated serenely on the surface of this marvelous reservoir of knowledge, experience, and power. Forty-eight lessons are hardly enough time and space to do justice to a book of this depth and complexity. I hope you will not assume that you have now studied the Old Testament. You have studied the parts of the Old Testament that the Gospel Doctrine Manual emphasizes, and (in these lessons) brief segments that I have highlighted. The Old Testament is worth revisiting many times in your life. As we study it with hearts opened and prepared to receive the lessons the Lord has taught us there, we will gain a broader understanding and greater depth of spiritual knowledge.

The ‘Hand of God’ by Yongsung Kim is one of Havenlight’s most popular pieces. It depicts Jesus Christ reaching into the water to help save Peter from drowning. This piece is a beautiful reminder of hope and would be an inspiring gift to give to someone who is working through difficult time, facing unforeseen trials, or feels like they themselves are drowning. As they open this painting and see it hanging in their home it will help them feel the love and light that Christ brings to each of us daily.
INTRODUCTION: Joseph Smith, speaking of the work of redemption for the dead called it the “most glorious of all subjects belonging to the everlasting gospel” (D&C 128:17). Why? What is there about this work that would cause the prophet to place its importance above any other subject belonging to the restoration of the gospel?

I was doing my usual post-workday Instagram scroll the other night when my thumb stopped dead in its tracks. An account I follow (@comefollowmedaily) had started a discussion on something called “gospel karaoke.” People were suggesting modern-day hymns they’d like to see scriptural characters sing. This brought the scriptures to life for me in a new, moving way, and I’ve come up with a few scenarios of my own. This made for a great personal study and could also be used for an activity during family home evening.
