Defending the Faith: The Book of Mormon was very carefully written

“Intertextuality” is a word used to describe ways in which various texts refer to, or play off of, each other, often without explicitly indicating it. For example, a 2012 book titled “Seven Habits of Highly Fulfilled People” unmistakably alludes to Stephen Covey’s famous 1990 best-seller, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” Sometimes, authors hope that their audiences will keep the other text in mind. The Book of Mormon contains numerous such examples, and probably quite a few remain to be discovered. John Welch has shown that legal language in the Book of Mormon tends to be highly consistent, perhaps indicating its dependence on underlying legal materials. Royal Skousen’s superb studies of the book’s textual history have established what he calls its “systematic nature”; its terminology and phrasing tend to be very consistent.

Researching Family History: Gathering the genealogy records in Germany that survived World War II

Near the end of World War II in a salt mine near Strassfurt, Germany, Elder Rudolph K. Poecker, a missionary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, put on a miner’s outfit. He accompanied the mine engineer all the way down to the floor some 1,312 feet or 400 meter, as is told in "Hearts Turned to the Fathers," Vol. 34, No. 2, by James B. Allen, Jessie L. Embrey and Kahlile B. Mehr and published by BYU Studies. There was a large cache of books containing genealogical records waiting for them, according to Kahlie Mehr's article in June 1981 Ensign article titled "The Langheinrich Legacy: Record-Gathering in Post-War Germany."

Boy Scouts proposing to lift ban on gay youth, LDS Church to evaluate

After months of national debate, the Boy Scouts of America on Friday announced it has prepared a resolution that would lift its longstanding ban on gay youth members. Scouting officials said the resolution will go before the roughly 1,400 voting members of the organization's National Council during its meeting next month. The proposal calls for ending the practice of excluding openly gay youths from participating in Scouting, but would continue to bar gay adults from serving in leadership positions.

Elder Nelson Delivers Spiritual Thanksgiving Feast to MTCs

On Thanksgiving Day, elders and sisters at missionary training centers around the world feasted spiritually on words of counsel from an Apostle and his wife. Later that day, at the Provo MTC, missionaries helped nourish others physically as they packed ingredients for 350,000 meals to be distributed to the needy through the Utah Food Bank. “Teaching and baptizing lead to thanksgiving that never ends,” declared Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in the live broadcast emanating from the missionary training center in Provo. His talk followed one given by his wife, Sister Wendy Nelson, who counseled the missionaries to put away childish things.
