LDS Church condemns past racism 'inside and outside the church'

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a forceful statement Wednesday condemning racism, "including any and all past racism by individuals both inside and outside the church." The statement came in response to a Washington Post political story about Mitt Romney's run for the presidency and his faith's former ban on giving black men the priesthood. The story included reported comments from a popular BYU religion professor that included personal speculation about the former ban. Many Mormons were upset by Professor Randy Bott's reported comments and some considered them racist.

“Have a great day!” I call out to the boys as I drop them off at school, pausing for a moment in the car to watch them as they head to their classrooms, clad in identical school uniforms, and nearly drowning in the huge backpacks they picked out for the new school year. I take in a deep breath and let it out slowly, relishing the silence in the car. “Please Lord, give me strength and peace today,” I pray. Praying in the car has become my daily ritual as I drop the kids off at school. It is the one place in my life where I can be truly alone – no children, nurses, or therapists to distract me. The act of putting on a seatbelt has become a sacrament for me, and now I utter a silent prayer every time I get in a car, whether I am alone or not.

World Wide Wed Features an LDS Temple Wedding, Mormon Beliefs About Garments, Eternal Marriage, More

World Wide Wed, a series that explores the customs of weddings around the world, featured an LDS couple, Melissa and Sergio, as they prepared to marry in the temple. The video focuses on the couple navigating difficult decisions, like how to include family members who are not part of the LDS faith, as well as their beliefs in everything relating to the temple—from garments to sealings to eternal marriage. As World Wide Wed says on Facebook, "witness what it takes to build a family that lasts beyond death."

BYU ranked fourth most ‘stress-inducing’ school in U.S.

A College Magazine article attempted to name the “most competitive, challenging and stress-inducing” schools in the country and placed Brigham Young University as number four on the list. BYU surpassed Harvard, United States Naval Academy, Columbia and Princeton, among others, in CM’s roundup of the most “high-strung” universities in the United States. The article claimed that BYU’s strict honor code and tough requirements for major programs contribute to its high-stress atmosphere. The author, Jensen Werley, explained that the unique combination of BYU’s high academic ranking with its rigid rules led her to put it on the top of the list.
