Recently on social media, Elder Gérald Caussé testified of the restored truths that are unique to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also shared the conversion story of his mother-in-law, Francine Babin, and reflected on the Book of Mormon’s crucial role in her decision to join the Church.
23 Restored Truths in the Book of Mormon
Elder Caussé says that Francine met two Latter-day Saint missionaries while living in France as a young mother of three children: “At the time, she had a lot of questions about life. She was searching for answers but couldn’t find satisfying [ones].”
When the missionaries came to Francine’s home, they gave her a list of 23 questions with answers from verses in the Book of Mormon. Elder Caussé included the following list in the comments of his Facebook and Instagram posts:
1. Does the Bible contain all the words of God? (2 Nephi 29 [pp. 131–133])
2. Who were the “other sheep” Jesus spoke of in John 10:16? (3 Nephi 15:13–24 [p. 538])
3. How can a person know that the Book of Mormon is true? Moroni 10:3–5 [p. 50])

6. How can God be both just and merciful? (Alma 42 [pp. 379–382])
7. What happens to our spirit after we die? (Alma 40:11–14 [pp. 375–376])
8. How can a person transform personal weaknesses into personal strengths? (Ether 12:27 [p. 626])
9. What happened on the American continent when Jesus was born in Bethlehem? (3 Nephi 1:15–21 [p. 502])
10. What happened on the American continent when the Savior was crucified in Jerusalem? (3 Nephi 8:5–23 [pp. 520–521])

The missionaries promised Francine that if she read the Book of Mormon in a spirit of prayer, she would receive answers to her questions. Elder Caussé says Francine followed their invitation and “couldn’t put the book down.” By the end of the week, she finished reading the entire Book of Mormon and decided she wanted to be baptized.
“What a Wonder It Is to Know”
The Apostle urged listeners not to take for granted the restored truths of the gospel, saying, “Sometimes, when we have things constantly before our eyes, we lose that sense of wonder. But how grateful we should be, and what a wonder it is to know what we know.”
He also testified of the universal nature of Christ’s gospel, affirming that His Church is “not simply another church, nor is it an American church; it is the Church of Jesus Christ that was restored here upon the earth in our time, for our time.”
Many people resonated with Elder Caussé’s message about his mother-in-law’s experience. One Facebook user wrote:
“When the missionaries taught me in 1984, I also had a list of 23 questions, the same as Elder Caussé mentioned here. I still have them and they were a wonderful tool to answer the questions with references to the Book of Mormon. They helped me to establish also a testimony of the restored Church of Jesus Christ.”
