In October 2018, it was my first general conference working for the Church News. As their web producer, I helped make talk summaries from the speakers go live in real time on our website. This could be both stressful and exciting—there are a lot of moving parts and long hours, but it was also rewarding being part of a dedicated team helping to make conference accessible to people everywhere.
One evening as my family went to a local mall, my children noticed a movie theater inside. I told them it was a theater mostly for grown-ups because alcohol was served there. Then my daughter asked, “Mom, how old do you have to be to drink alcohol?” When I responded that the legal drinking age was 21, I told her I how I had passed up that age long ago, and though I am legally able to drink, I have never had a sip of alcohol and never will.
As a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I often served in rural areas where the dog population sometimes seemed to equal the human presence. Our mission abounded with dog stories. I mean these were nearly universally unpleasant but often humorous. Generally, they were not for the consumption of the dog-loving folk and I learned from my parents who became dog lovers late in life that criticizing nearly any aspect of our canine brothers can be perilous. I hope that the subject is not in breach of good taste, but given the season (missionary reunions, etc.) I thought it might provide a little entertainment. I shall offer a few fairly tame stories, but I suspect it may stimulate something more radical. I hope it does, actually.
Last night my EC and I gathered the boys and watched the movie "Chasing Mavericks." It was a surfing movie that came out last Fall, starring Gerard Butler. It bombed at the box office, but I admire their willingness to stick with a PG rating. I liked the movie. It had some problems, but we all enjoyed it. I like surfing, and surfing movies. I liked the one where the shark ate the girl's arm, and I like documentaries like "Riding Giants." So when this came out, I knew that I'd see it.
Recently, he won the Surfing America 2016 series championship. Last year he won the title of King Grom when he beat out nine other surfers from around the world to compete on a Brazilian island. Oh, and he's only 17.
One of the most important lessons learned by those people who have glimpsed beyond the veil of death is what is most important and lasting in life. It often brings a radical reordering of their priorities in mortality. These glimpses into the spirit world remind us that one of the greatest blessings of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ is that we know which things matter most; what our eternal priorities should be. . . .
One of the overarching messages of these accounts from the end of the book of Mosiah is that God keeps his promises. Over and over again as these dramas unfold, we see evidence powerful evidence of the truthfulness of the Lord’s declaration in D&C 1:38:
