As in all majority Christian nations of Africa, Christmas in Kenya is a time of celebration, rejoicing, and reconnecting with family. Almost everyone, irrespective of faith or religious belief, puts aside the cares of career and work and travels “upcountry” to be with loved ones. The big cities and towns have a ghost feeling as a temporary migration takes place for about 10 days—from a day before Christmas to the second day of the new year.

Loneliness was not something I thought I would experience in my early 40’s. Raise your hand if you saw the Lifetime movie based on Prince William and Kate Middleton? I’m totally raising mine right now, and am proud of it! I have no idea why, but I am so ridiculously intrigued by this whole royal wedding thing. Is it the inner girl in me who wishes I could be in Kate’s shoes (and hats), or am I more in love with Prince William than I thought? Either way, I’m giddy for Friday. And for what it’s worth, the actor who played Prince William was adorable, but the actress they cast for Kate just didn’t do the real Kate justice. As a member of the millennial generation, I was chiefly raised in the progressive era of plastic jungle gyms and social safety nets. From the time I was very young, my life has felt safely padded by society, with little room for any real or imagined danger to threaten my fragile existence. Mine was a childhood where both teams won a trophy. Mine was a childhood where there were no losers, and everyone was special. Mine was a childhood where there was never anything wrong with anyone ever.

On Wednesday afternoon June 1, a tornado hit the city of Springfield, Mass. Tornadoes are so rare in New England that no one expected it. Primary children of the Ludlow Ward, Springfield Massachusetts Stake each had a unique experience during the tornado. One family hurried to their cellar to take cover. They read their scriptures by flashlight and slept through the night downstairs. A few children were riding in cars. It took these children two or three hours to get home because broken power lines and trees blocked the roads. One child was home when he heard the roar of the wind like a low flying airplane and felt windows break around him and trees crack. Another child asked his aunt, "What can stop a tornado?" Before she could answer, he said, "I know. Prayer can!" All of the children were praying to be safe, praying for family members to return home safely and praying for the people of their city.
