Samuel Brown is an academic, a shock trauma ICU doctor, and a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. He has achieved much professionally, but it was not until his wife, Kate Holbrook, was diagnosed with cancer in her eye and he faced the risk of losing his beloved that Sam realized he had neglected things in his home. This realization was painful and required work to undo the hurt of the past, but together, he and his wife have rebuilt a home and a marriage they are grateful for and proud of.
Full disclosure: I’m not married. Yet. But as an engaged person, I’ve spent a lot more time lately thinking about what marriage means and the role of this new person that I will call husband and, one day, the father of my children. I’ve been learning a lot, too, from listening to the way women around me speak about their husbands, fiancés, boyfriends, and the men in their lives. What I’ve heard has been a little surprising.
Commentators on both the right and left and both secular and religious note with disdain that Mormons (Latter Day Saints, as Mormons refer to themselves) have irrational practices and beliefs. The former, we are told, includes the wearing of sacred undergarments and the latter includes posthumous baptisms and the claims by the prophet of Mormonism to have found and deciphered engraved golden plates in New York State. I read and hear these dismissals of Mormonism with some amusement -- because everyone who makes these charges holds beliefs and/or practices that outsiders consider just as irrational.
It’s been a great month for Jewish-LDS relations in Los Angeles. Readers of this blog know of my firm belief that Mormons have a great deal to say to Jews, and vice versa. Judging from the turnout at three recent events, many other Mormons and Jews feel the same way. Last Sunday Jewish and Mormon leaders gathered at an LDS chapel in order to hear an inspired presentation on Mormons and the Holy Land given by Joe and Marilyn Bentley, who recently returned from 18 months of service as the Directors of Hosting and Outreach at the BYU Center in Jerusalem. The Bentleys have a great love for Israel and the Jewish people, and clearly enjoyed sharing interesting details of their assignment and of LDS involvement in the Holy Land for over 160 years.
The Church tweeted this heartwarming video honoring the life and legacy of President Thomas S. Monson. We are grateful for our beloved prophet and his life of compassion, service, and dedication. We will miss him.

Many US citizens have begun casting their votes prior to election day on Tuesday, November 3. But while voters may have strong opinions about the candidates on their ballot, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints “takes no sides in support of or against political parties and candidates and encourages individual members of the Church to participate and engage in the political process,” a recent Church News article reminded readers.
On their last day in Europe on a trip to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary, Utah couple Kurt and Melissa Cochran were caught in the midst of London's deadliest terrorist attack in 12 years. Three died and another 40 were injured when a lone attacker plowed his car into a large crowd and then stabbed a police officer to death on U.K. Parliament grounds.
The Church recently released a new website with valuable resources to help victims of abuse and those who love them know how to report abuse, seek help, and find healing.
