Andrew Unsworth and the four other organists for The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square have experienced a lull in their usual performance schedule due to COVID-19 restrictions. Unsworth took advantage of the extra time to learn new music and work on other projects. But he found that he missed not having any performances to practice for.
“At first it was great, and then it got to be a little weird,” Unsworth told Church News.
But soon enough, Unsworth and his fellow organists came up with an idea that would give them plenty of opportunities to perform. Starting June 17, 2020, the organists began livestreaming 45-minute recitals, which are scheduled for every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at noon. The recitals will be broadcast on the Choir’s YouTube channel, the Choir’s website, and the Church’s live watch page.
Unsworth has loved the organ since he was very young. As a 4-year-old, he used to pretend the couch was an organ and “play” while his mother practiced the organ. Unsworth first played the tabernacle organ at age 17 and has been a Tabernacle Choir organist since 2007. He told Church News he is excited to once again begin “communicating my love for what’s beautiful in music to other people.”
