During my time as a recently called missionary at the Provo Missionary Training Center, my companion and I were asked to guide some new missionaries upstairs from the parking garage and help them carry their suitcases.
Going into the basement, carrying luggage, and crying with these new missionaries as we ascended the stairs together—it all reminded me of the Savior.
Jesus Christ Is There with Us
Just as my companion and I went below ground to help those new missionaries, Jesus Christ comes down to our level. When we find ourselves in a low place, it’s a chance for the Savior to lift us up. Doctrine and Covenants 122:8 reminds us, “The Son of Man hath descended below them all.” Whether we are weighed down by sin, sorrow, or something else, Christ has experienced everything evil and difficult in this world, and He is equipped to carry us through it, too.
He cries with us, as I cried with those missionaries who missed their loved ones. I understood what they were going through, because I had experienced it myself. In a grander way, Christ doesn’t just feel for us, He feels with us. He possesses a divine empathy that allows Him to understand our pains and troubles in a way that no one else can.
He also walks with us. The Savior says, “Thou shalt abide in me, and I in you; therefore walk with me” (Moses 6:34). We are safe when we let Him lead us on His path. And, if we let Him, He will also help us with our baggage as we ascend the steps toward Heavenly Father. Like Mosiah 24:14 says, “I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs.”
The Savior comes down to us at our level, but He doesn’t leave us there. He leads us upward, toward God. And through Christ, we can find reconciliation with our Father in Heaven.
Becoming Reconciled to God through Jesus Christ
We are invited, “Believe in Christ, and be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do” (2 Nephi 25:23). Reconciliation means to bring into consonance or accord. To make compatible one with another. To harmonize. As we walk with the Savior, living our covenants, we become reconciled to God.
My experience with the missionaries in the parking garage taught me that all I need to do is let Christ lead me. As we do this, little by little, our wills will align with His, our vision will heighten, and our souls can rest. Just as Enos said, “And I, Enos, knew it would be according to the covenant which he had made; wherefore my soul did rest.”
