Tuesday night’s Kelly Clarkson tour stop in Salt Lake City included a special guest appearance by the LeBarons, a Latter-day Saint family that went viral last April after posting a YouTube video performance of “One Day More” from Les Miserables they recorded as a Mother’s Day gift for their mother, Denise. Their original video has now been viewed over 11 million times.

Welcoming the family on stage, including their parents, Clarkson explained that she saw the video go viral, and—as a former musical theater performer and fan whose first-ever play was Les Miserables—she instantly began making plans to beg them to come sing in her Salt Lake show. She explained that when someone first told her about the video she had very low expectations. “There is no way an entire family is this talented,” she said. “I kept waiting for the weakest link. . . . And there’s not. They’re like crazy talented. I’m telling you, what they’re about to do, it’s going to seem like it’s effortless. It’s not. It’s a big thing they’re doing right now vocally, and they’re all related.”

But Kelly didn’t stop there. As a mother herself, she then asked which of the Lebaron women was holding a baby in the video. “I was like ‘What?’ And then you started belting it out and your baby was just like, ‘Yeah mom,’ rocking on your hip. That was my favorite part because you were just acting like it was normal, and you’re amazingly talented at singing.”

Clarkson said the LeBarons asked her if she wanted them to do the shortened version but she wanted to hear the whole thing, whether the crowd liked it or not. At the end of the performance, the crowd roared to its feet in approval.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more blessed group of individuals,” she said. As if performing in front of a packed Vivint Arena wasn’t enough, before the LeBarons left the stage, Clarkson told them that she was giving them a $1,000 gift card each to attend the play of their choice and that she hoped they would learn the music and come perform on her new daytime talk show.

We caught up with the LeBaron’s after the show regarding their experience. They explained that one of Clarkson’s producers reached out last month, asking if they would be interested in performing.

“It was surreal. We were all super excited because we have tons of Kelly Clarkson fans in the family, of course, and it was just amazing,” Jayson LeBaron, who sang the part of Jean Valjean, told LDS Living.

In an interview with the Deseret News after the video went viral, Heidi LeBaron Garn, the second oldest LeBaron sibling, said that she thinks the draw of the video is more than her family's ability to sing.

“I feel like the reason why this video was so powerful is because . . . it was a video of family coming together,” she said. “And I think that resonates, with everybody wanting to have that. It’s deeper than the singing. It’s the sense of family that people want.”
