FHE: Virtue

This lesson on Choice & Accountability is the first in an 8-part FHE series featuring the Young Women's values. Get the other 7 lessons here.

Song: “More Holiness Give Me” (Hymns, no. 131, especially verse three)

Focus: Value Experience #2

Color Meaning: The color gold reminds us that gold is pure. It shines. It is soft, not harsh or brash. It is precious and must be refined.

Lesson:

Read the following quote from Elaine S. Dalton and the color meaning of virtue:

"Virtue begins in the heart and in the mind." What does it mean to be refined? What are some ways that we can let the Lord refine us?

Read Moroni 6:9. What role does the Holy Ghost play in our refinement?

Read the following from the Personal Progress booklet: Virtuous living “at all times and in all things, and in all places” qualifies you for the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost. When you are baptized and confirmed, you are given the gift of the Holy Ghost to guide all aspects of your life. Since the Holy Ghost does not dwell in unclean tabernacles, living a virtuous life is a prerequisite to having the companionship of the Holy Ghost and receiving the blessings of temple ordinances.

How have different family members read the following scripture references. After each scripture, take a few minutes to identify all of the blessings promised in these verses. A few ideas are listed to get you started.

• John 14:26–27
Ability to learn and remember, find peace, comfort, and reassurance

• John 15:26
Ability to find truth, comfort, and increase your testimony

• 2 Nephi 32:1–5
Power to bear testimony, receive inspiration and guidance, and increase knowledge

• Doctrine and Covenants 45:57–59
Receive guidance, find truth and not be deceived, inherit the earth, have and raise righteous children, see the glory of the Lord and live under His reign

• Doctrine and Covenants 88:3–4
Find comfort, always have the Holy Ghost, have eternal life and live in the celestial kingdom

• Doctrine and Covenants 121:45–46
Have confidence, use priesthood blessings, always have the Holy Ghost, and receive exaltation

Once you have read all of the scriptures and identified the blessings, give family members an opportunity to share about a time when they felt the guidance of the Holy Ghost.

*If completing the value experience, make sure to record all of the blessings and your experience with the Holy Ghost in your Personal Progress journal.13498
