A step-by-step guide for every first-time temple goer

The major burden of the priesthood of God is to serve God’s children. The higher the office in the priesthood, the greater the expectation to serve well and much. Without service, the priesthood is a hollow ordination and counts for little. Without service, there can be no power in the priesthood. It is through service that the power of the priesthood is manifest.

The scriptural and doctrinal meaning of the word virtue has always alluded me. When the woman with an issue of blood touched the hem of Christ’s garment and He felt virtue go out of Him, that tells me that virtue must mean something more than just not having inappropriate sex. So what does it mean to have virtue or to be virtuous?

For many of us learning is a mixed bag. We may be good at learning or we may struggle to retain information we read. Many of us learn best when we do something versus read about something. But no matter how we prefer to learn, the question we need to answer is “Have we learned to love learning?”

While I was serving as the Scout Master in our ward, our troop was creating a movie to earn the Cinematography merit badge. We needed to film one of the scenes with a luxury car. One of my neighbors had two beautiful Ferraris, so I arranged with him to film the scene at his home.

Shortly after my husband and I moved into a new ward, I had a prompting that I should ask one of the ladies in the ward if she would like me to type up her memoir/journal/whatever-you-call-it. She had somewhat severe arthritis so it wasn’t totally unjustified, but still, I thought, “That is a ‘beyond-the-boundaries question.” (Seriously . . . if someone asked me that, I would be a bit concerned—especially if it was someone I didn’t know very well.)

I have a confession to make—sometimes being a member of the Church makes me feel very uncomfortable. When I stand to bear my testimony, I feel a bit embarrassed. When I’m scheduling appointments with my visiting teaching sisters, I sometimes secretly hope that they’ll cancel or postpone. Missionary experiences? I don’t often pray for them, and if I do, I pray that I’ll see them coming a few days ahead of time so I can prepare.

In my early twenties, I admitted to a friend and mentor that I could feel the presence of the Spirit but couldn’t discern specific answers. He asked me if I had asked the Lord to teach me His language—meaning, what it felt and sounded like when He was speaking to me. I hadn’t, but that night I began to ask the Lord to teach me the language of revelation.
