You could quickly summarize the story of Dorothy Woodhouse’s life by saying that she was taken in at 18 by her 26-year-old Young Women president and that alone would make her story remarkable. The reality is that there is so much more to her story.

The Boston Globe, USA Today, and other news media outlets across the nation have reported on a picture of Jesus Christ that miraculously survived a fire that consumed the First Baptist Church in Boston, leaving nothing behind but a charred frame and ash. The fire began after lightning struck the historic church, built in 1872.

Warren Smith and his wife, Amanda Barnes Smith, were among the first to hear and accept the gospel after The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized. They were baptized in 1831 and moved to Kirtland, Ohio, the following year. There they were privileged to participate in many of the early events of Church history, including the building of the Kirtland Temple and the marvelous events surrounding its dedication.

A few months ago, I received a strong impression to write on a specific topic. It was a welcome revelation, because as far as my writing has gone, it has seemed that God has had no strong feelings on what I should write. I know He cares about my hobbies and interests, of course, but as I’ve prayed about what to write in recent years, passing ideas by Him or asking for direction, it’s almost been as though His answer has been, “Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. You could do that. Whatever you feel you want to do is fine with me.”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released the following statement on October 29:

In January 1945, American Master Sergeant Roddie Edmonds, who was in charge of about a thousand American prisoners at a German POW camp, was told to have all Jewish prisoners report in front of their barracks in the morning. Instead, Master Sergeant Edmonds ordered all the prisoners to stand together in front of their barracks. When the German officer saw them, he said to Edmonds, “They cannot all be Jews.” Edmonds responded, “We are all Jews.” The German officer took out his pistol and threatened to shoot Edmonds. The Master Sergeant said, “If you shoot me, you will have to shoot all of us, and after the war you will be tried for war crimes.” The German officer turned around and left. About 200 Jewish American prisoners were spared.

As part of the Church’s initiative to simplify and focus on our Savior, the Church moved away from holding a cultural celebration the night before the dedication of the Concepcion Chile Temple and instead held a devotional. During the devotional, President Nelson spoke of the blessings of the temple and how youth can prepare for the eternal blessings that await them.
