45928.jpg

This month's edition of weekly FHE lessons is based on the new family movie Trek, which follows a young Mormon teenager named Tom and his friends on their handcart journey. Each lesson includes a scene from movie to watch and discuss. Your whole family will laugh along and be inspired by Trek: The Movieavailable at Deseret Book stores and deseretbook.com.

Song: “The Spirit of God” (Hymns, 2) or “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” (Hymns, 136)

Scriptures:

“Therefore, strengthen your brethren in all your conversation, in all your prayers, in all your exhortations, and in all your doings. And behold, and lo, I am with you to bless you and deliver you forever. Amen” (D&C 108:7-8).
“. . . But behold, I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance” (1 Nephi 1:20).

Lesson:

Discuss the following scene from Trek: The Movie.

Near the end of the film, Tom and Anna talk about their experience getting lost, praying for help, and receiving inspiration that allowed them to be found.  Anna asks him, “What happened out there on that hill tonight, Tom? Where did that idea come from?” Tom responds, “I think, maybe, we weren’t as alone out there as we thought we were.”

Questions to Discuss:

- When do you feel alone?

- What makes us feel alone?

- Did Christ ever feel alone?

- How can we keep Christ with us always?

- Have you experienced a time when, because of the Savior, you didn’t feel alone?

- How does the Lord speak to you?

Because of our knowledge of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we know that we are never truly alone in experiencing our pain and sorrow. The Savior, who suffered for our individual struggles, knows perfectly how we feel and what we are going through. And because of the Holy Ghost, we can have constant companionship and comfort from the Lord. When we need help, the Spirit can speak to us to guide and protect us from danger. Even in our most difficult times, we will often find that heaven's help is closer than we think.

“Revelation For the Church, Revelation for Our Lives” by President Russell M. Nelson (April 2018)

"Imagine the miracle of it! Whatever our Church calling, we can pray to our Heavenly Father and receive guidance and direction, be warned about dangers and distractions, and be enabled to accomplish things we simply could not do on our own. If we will truly receive the Holy Ghost and learn to discern and understand His promptings, we will be guided in matters large and small.
"When I recently faced the daunting task of choosing two counselors, I wondered how I could possibly choose just two from twelve men whom I love and respect.
"Because I know that good inspiration is based upon good information, I prayerfully met one-on-one with each Apostle. I then sequestered myself in a private room in the temple and sought the Lord’s will. I testify that the Lord instructed me to select President Dallin H. Oaks and President Henry B. Eyring to serve as my counselors in the First Presidency."

“We Are Not Alone” by Sister Sheri L. Dew (October 1998)

"It has been nearly three years since I received one of those dreaded early-morning phone calls. My younger brother Steve had suffered a massive heart attack and died during the night. In an instant, and without warning, my most trusted friend was gone.
"During the next few days many who loved Steve and his wife and children traveled to their home in Colorado. But it wasn’t until after the funeral that I realized that seven dear friends of mine had made the long trip from Salt Lake City to attend the service. Not one of them had ever met my brother. They had come to support me. You can imagine my emotions as they encircled me and one of them said, “We just didn’t want you to be alone today.” In word and deed, they taught a divine principle. It is not good, nor is it intended, for any of us to be alone.
"The pain of loneliness seems to be part of the mortal experience. But the Lord in His mercy has made it so that we need never deal with the challenges of mortality alone."

“You Are Not Alone” by Sister Janette C. Hales (April 1992)

"How I love Ardeth Kapp and Jayne Malan and the recently released board members. And what a wonderful feeling came over me when President Monson called to tell me that my counselors had been called. He said, “You shouldn’t be alone.” And then he quickly added, “You are not alone.”
"I have a testimony of those words and what comfort they give. Four years ago, when I found myself quite suddenly a widow and the youngest of my five children leaving for a mission, I felt alone. I did a lot of walking at that time, and one day I told a neighbor I found myself thinking about youth. She said, 'Really? I wonder why?' I concluded that perhaps I was trying to remember who I was before I was married. I said, 'If I ever have a chance to work with young people again, I will be so much more patient, so much more gentle, and so much more loving.' And I have since added, 'I will do all in my power to encourage young people to prepare for the future.'"

“Continuing Revelation” by President Henry B. Eyring (October 2014)

"My hope for us today is that we may all feel love and light from God. There are many listening today who feel a pressing need for that blessing of personal revelation from our loving Heavenly Father.
"For mission presidents, it may be a pleading prayer to know how to encourage a struggling missionary. For a father or a mother in a war-ravaged place in the world, it will be a desperate need to know whether to move their family to safety or whether to stay where they are. Hundreds of stake presidents and bishops are praying today to know how to help the Lord rescue a lost sheep. And for a prophet, it will be to know what the Lord would have him speak to the Church and to a world in turmoil."
