Even in my sleep, I’m thinking about nursery. Serving there each week brings me so much happiness. I’ve always said that wherever the children are is a sacred place.
After joining the Church at age 22 in New Zealand, my first calling was to be a Primary teacher. Those children taught me the gospel. Now, I share the peace they helped me find with the littlest ones in our ward. I love being in nursery; even if there is just one child there that day, Matthew 18:20 still applies to us: “where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
If you’ve ever looked at the nursery manual, the lessons are super short with titles like “I Can Be Thankful” or “I Can Obey.” Though the messages are simple, everything we do is focused on Christ. I always try to make eye contact with the little ones and speak sincerely from my heart. I find a lot of personal satisfaction watching the light glow brightly in their eyes. And I love it when you can see the light bulbs go off in their mind when they understand something.
It’s such a blessing to be with these little souls. They were so recently with God before they came to earth, and I believe you can feel that. I know nursery is where I need to be every week—and I’m so grateful for the chance.
