Stories of Faith

I don’t read the scriptures front to back anymore. Here’s what I do instead

When I turned eight, my mom invited me to start saving money to buy my own set of scriptures. She’d pay me to do tasks at home and then help me set money apart for tithing and my scriptures.

I remember the day we went to the distribution center at the Mexico City Temple and I bought my own Book of Mormon and Bible. I’ve loved the scriptures ever since.

I used to read the scriptures chronologically, but I have a different approach now.

Before I study, I ponder things going on in my life and pray to receive revelation on which chapters or stories I should turn to. Often a mix of scriptures will help me.

God has always guided me in important decisions, like changing schools, choosing friends, or deciding where to live. How He guides me is through the scriptures. And in moments when I’ve really needed comfort, I’ve felt God’s love and reassurance while reading.

I’ve been promised that if I read the scriptures and pray, Satan won’t have power over me. I’ve noticed that when I forget to read, it’s harder to discern what Jesus wants me to do.

Being consistent in spiritual things helps me be safe and in tune with the Savior. I know that I can always trust Him to know what will bring me happiness.

My favorite verse is 2 Nephi 22:2: “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid; for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also has become my salvation.”
