Earlier this month, my wife and I took our oldest child to the temple for the first time. She had just turned 12 years old. It was a sacred and joyous occasion, one we had looked forward to for many years with great anticipation. Our experience at the temple with our daughter exceeded even our highest expectations and was a highlight of our 12 years of parenting. There are few things I hope for more as a father than that my children will cherish the temple and always remain worthy to enter and learn within its sacred walls.
What a thought-provoking, and sometimes hard, message we need to hear about the difference between our beliefs and our culture.
What do I think about during the sacrament? Over the years here are a few of the things I have thought and worried about that I am not so proud of (in no particular order):
Beards are a tricky topic to discuss within LDS culture. It’s one of those taboo topics like caffeine and R-rated movies. Other than BYU’s Honor Code and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir standards (which aren't Church doctrine), and the rules for missionaries and temple workers, I’m almost positive there’s no official Church statement on whether or not male members can sport facial hair.
Mormon Newsroom Pacific recently shared this short video of three-time Olympic medalist and four-time world champion shot putter Valerie Adams sharing her testimony of our Savior.
There is a stack of dishes in the sink that I’m really tempted to do. The last few days, I’ve also been ready to grab the weed whacker and tackle the weeds in my front yard. I don’t like going to bed with dishes in my sink, and, well, when weeds start creeping close to my height, it’s hard not to want to whack them. (And it’s not like I don’t have a million other things that need to be done in my home, too.) With apologies to my neighbors for the weeds, and recognition that my family may be bowl-less tomorrow for the morning rush, I’m practicing a little motto I’ve heard before.
I think I can I can speak for the whole corporate office of Deseret Book when I say the LDS Living recipe contest days are the best work days of the year. Seriously.
Fun
My father passed away. Yes, you know him. My dad: the firework salesman. The builder of log homes. The creator of Him.
Arizona might have less symbolic importance than Michigan, but it is probably of more practical significance. That is because it’s one of the few Republican states to award its delegates on a truly winner-take-all basis, without any qualifications or complication. Get one more vote than your rivals in Arizona, and you take all 29 of its delegates.
Jason F. Wright, a Mormon New York Times best-selling author, decided to give a classroom of children and their teachers a big surprise. One of his biggest fans, Zack, and his class were reading one of his books. After being asked by the teachers of Monroe Elementary School to Skype and talk with a classroom of children about being a writer, he decided it would be more fun and fulfilling to give them a surprise and actually show up at their school.
