In today’s world, the internet is a vital invention that has completely changed the face of communication and commerce—it’s hard to imagine the world without it. But the completion of the transcontinental railroad in the west desert of Utah had a similarly revolutionary effect on 1869 commerce and communication, dropping travel costs from $1,000 to $65, eliminating the need for dangerous maritime passages via Panama and Cape Horn, and increasing wealth and resources. It was celebrated in every major city in America: the Liberty Bell pealed in Philadelphia, 100 cannons were fired in New York City, and a parade three miles long wound through Chicago. Recently, he won the Surfing America 2016 series championship. Last year he won the title of King Grom when he beat out nine other surfers from around the world to compete on a Brazilian island. Oh, and he's only 17.
I remember learning in an American history class about George Washington, John Adams, and the first peaceful transfer of power in American government. It was a significant moment in world history and one that I haven’t thought about the importance of until recently. Because although plans are in the works for a peaceful transfer between presidents of the United States of America, the reaction I have been watching from Americans has been anything but peaceful. With emotions raging, I have watched individuals and a nation struggle to even consider “praying for the president-elect, for his new administration, and for elected leaders across the nation and the world,” as the First Presidency urged in their statement following the presidential election results.
