My grandmother, a belle of the 1920s, bound her generous bosom so she could mimic the waiflike profile so much en vogue at that time. Eventually the style moved on. I don’t know if she told my adorable, ringlet-headed, saucer-eyed mother that she was a beautiful child. I do know she told her she was too skinny as a young girl and then later made it known that it was a shame her husband had the better legs of the two of them. My mother has always told me I was lovely, but I can faithfully mimic her grimace as she patted her neck in the mirror while I watched her put on her makeup. She was probably about my age now when she started that squinty neck-pat, along with the fretful conversations about the bags under her eyes.
On May 29, 2021, US Navy Lt. Ridge Alkonis took his wife and children to hike a portion of Mount Fuji, a famous mountain where he were stationed in Japan. On their way home, they planned to stop at an ice cream shop Ridge had visited during his time serving in Japan as a missionary years earlier. Ridge was mid-conversation with his 7-year-old daughter when he suddenly lost consciousness and consequently lost control of the car he was driving, resulting in the deaths of two people. Ridge was sentenced to three years in prison. His wife and family were determined to bring him home. This is their story.
Writing about the LDS faith as an outsider can be tricky; pop culture is rife with mocking representations of members. So, imagine the minefield that local artist Chris Hoffman is wading through as he launches his comic book Salt City Strangers, featuring an all-LDS superhero team. “Utah and members of the church don’t get a fair shake in modern comic books,” says Hoffman. “Godzilla was here once, tearing down the Church building. One of She Hulk’s secretaries in her office is LDS.”
A letter from the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, read Sunday in many LDS worship services, urges members to contribute "regularly and generously" to the church's missionary fund in light of the recent surge in missionary applications. "With the recent change in missionary age of service, the number of missionaries serving has increased dramatically," the letter says. "Many of these new missionaries come from modest circumstances. To help maintain this missionary force, we encourage members, as they are able, to contribute regularly and generously to the General Missionary Fund of the church.
Twilight author Stephanie Meyer captivates her audience by weaving one single concept throughout her entire series--the quest for eternal love. As romantic and fantastical as this may be to read, for Meyer, a Mormon, it is more than just mere fantasy--it’s reality; minus, of course, all the vampire action. The belief that love is eternal is at the very heart of the meaning of love for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It’s the lens through which Mormons view their most personal relationships, serve community and extend their outreach in charitable humanitarian efforts globally.
