Since becoming a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I’ve encountered a few cultural differences that took a little adjustment. For example, in the Baptist church, the same preacher delivers the sermon almost every Sunday, so it was strange to me that in this Church we didn’t have the same preacher every week. To make things even stranger, it was folks from the congregation that delivered the sermons!
There was never any question in my mind that I would serve a mission. The only question I had was, “Where will I serve?” I thought I knew the answer. My dad went on a mission to Germany. My older brother went on a mission to Germany. My sister’s boyfriend—and future husband—went on a mission to Germany. I thought I was going to Germany too. In fact, I planned on it.
In January, Elders Bednar and Rasband led the first visitors on a tour through the newly completed Rome Italy Temple, which included political leaders and journalists from across Europe. But they weren't the only apostles to visit the Eternal City.
My sister-in-law Cheryl Harward Wilcox came to value the sacrament much more as she helped care for her mother, Melva, until she passed away at age 92. Melva was in the hospital in Payson, Utah, when it was decided that there was nothing more that could be done except to keep her as comfortable as possible until she passed on. As preparations were being made to transport her back to her home, two brethren from a local ward came into the room and asked Cheryl if her mother would like the sacrament. At first, Cheryl told them, “No, thank you.” Her mom could hardly swallow. Then Cheryl said, “On second thought, let me ask her.” Cheryl leaned close to her mother’s ear and said, “There are two priesthood holders here. Would you like to try to take the sacrament?”
This month, the Joseph Smith Papers Project reached an important milestone on the josephsmithpapers.org website. The site was updated to include more than one hundred new documents, including discourses, sermons, letters, and meeting minutes dating from June 1844, the final month of Joseph Smith’s life. Among these documents are items dealing with Joseph Smith’s arrest and imprisonment in Carthage, Illinois, and letters to and from his family members, friends, fellow church members, lawyers, and the governor of Illinois.

"We stand united tonight for our LGBTQ youth," lead singer of the band Imagine Dragons Dan Reynolds said while looking across more than 17,000 people gathered at the Brent Brown Ballpark for the LoveLoud Festival on Saturday. "We love you; we stand with you; we accept you for all that is. Please, feel our love tonight; we celebrate you."
“Dad, can I be ordained a deacon right after midnight?” my 11-year-old, Koleson, asked me from the backseat.
