Porter and Carlie Ellett: The Kansas City Chiefs' Left-Hand Man and How God Led Him to a Super Bowl

When Porter Ellett was 4 years old, he fell off the back of a truck and lost the use of his arm. Then as a teenager, he decided to have that arm amputated. Today, he is known around the NFL as “Lefty,” a nickname given to him after Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid began calling Porter his “left-hand man.” On this week’s episode, Porter and his wife, Carlie, share the story of why Porter has never let having one arm stop him from achieving his dreams—and how God paved the way for him to do represent something far more meaningful than football on the sport's biggest stage.

Here’s a fun fact—the word for “Ruth” in Hebrew means "compassionate friend." And when you think of how friendship was all Ruth and Naomi had during a time of uncertainty, that name has an extra special meaning. As we study the book of Ruth and 1 Samuel 1–3 this week, we’ll see how this compassionate friendship exists between Ruth and Naomi and between all of us and Christ as we face challenges and uncertainties in our lives.

Have you ever been given a nickname? Sometimes, those names are silly or just for fun. But other times, they can show an important part of our personality. They can even represent who we are to different friends. The Savior had many, many names He was known by during His ministry—Lamb of God, Healer, and Bread of Life are just a few of the terms we hear Christ being called in Matthew 14, Mark 6, and John 5–6. This week, we find out how we can deepen our relationship with Christ by coming to know Him in a new way as we learn the loving names He was called by His disciples.
