The often-used phrase “pay attention” is apt: you dispose of a limited budget of attention that you can allocate to activities, and if you try to go beyond your budget, you will fail. It is the mark of effortful activities that they interfere with each other, which is why it is difficult or impossible to conduct several at once.

Several years ago we spent the Christmas holidays skiing at a cabin. That was a really good idea for the first two days, but by the end of the third day I could no longer walk, so I ended up lounging in my (very cute) pajamas. Later that evening I agreed to go to the store because my kids decided they didn’t want what had been prepared for dinner, but I really didn’t want to change. My sisters-in-law were sitting at the kitchen table and I asked them, “Do you think it would be a big deal if I wore my pajamas to the grocery store?” Their reply? “No, you will be there for five minutes; no one will even notice what you are wearing.”
Can you think of anything more frightening than being lost at sea with only a kayak and your thoughts to keep you company? Well last week that nightmare became a reality for Arlen Tanner, an LDS attorney from Missouri.
The word “addict” or “addiction” conjures up images for almost everyone. A person would have to search far to find someone that had lived life unaffected by addiction either directly or indirectly. Most people know an addict. Many of us are, or have been, addicts. Those of us that have been there never thought we would be. Most of us are still bewildered over how it happened and enormously frustrated in our attempts to remedy our situations. No one ever sets out to be an addict. Some happen upon it accidentally, others mistakenly through immature or poor decisions early on. However it happened, it is certain that the havoc wrought by addiction was not and is not the intent of the person ensnared by this deadly malady.
As a recent RM and a young Relief Society president at BYU in October 2012, I watched the missionary age change announcement transform the entire dynamic of my ward. Many of the 19-year-old sisters’ lives were turned upside down. Suddenly, many were eligible to serve a mission right then.

We’ve all read, or at least heard something similar to the words of King Benajmin in Mosiah 4, reminding us that we are all beggars in the sight of God and telling us “ye will not suffer that the beggar putteth up his petition to you in vain, and turn him out to perish” (Mosiah 4: 16). He also tells us not to judge these people and say to ourselves, “The man has brought upon himself his misery; therefore I will stay my hand, and will not give unto him of my food, nor impart unto him of my substance that he may not suffer, for his punishments are just” (Mosiah 4:17).

Most LDS singles strive to be their best in every aspect of life. They fear settling for something that is mediocre in dating and love. They hope for amazing (and even enviable) relationships.
