“Your self-worth comes from who you are as a person,” Calaway says. “All of us have a divine beauty inside of us that we are gifted from our Heavenly Father, and we’re also gifted a beautiful shell, and when we learn to combine the two and to exercise control over our shell by using the knowledge we have of our spirits, we start to really understand our divine potential.”
Here are a few ways to make your sacrament meeting talk a good experience from podium to pew.
In March of 2011, Stacie Crimm cried with joy upon learning that she was finally pregnant at the age of 41. It was a happy, miraculous moment, as doctors had previously told her that she would never be able to have a child. However, the elation was short lived. A few months into the pregnancy, Stacie began experiencing severe headaches and double vision. A medical scan revealed that she had an aggressive cancer spreading through her head and neck. Without treatment it would be terminal. Doctors informed her that the cancer could be treated with chemotherapy, but that would likely prove fatal for her baby. Stacie faced an excruciating choice: her life or her baby’s.
A few years ago I noticed a shift in my fourth-grade son. Typically talkative, he had become slightly withdrawn, moody, and just less himself. Ironically—and thankfully—at the time I was reading Gary Chapman’s The Five Love Languages of Children. When we talked about his school day I mussed his hair, rubbed his shoulder, or simply touched his arm. Within a few days, I couldn’t believe the difference—he was back to himself.

If there’s one dependable sign that it’s Christmas, it’s the sudden appearance of poinsettias in every display window and on every piece of Christmas decor. Our office here at LDS Living recently had some of these festive plants appear in the lobby of each floor of our building. However, after only a week of being placed there, when I came in on Monday after the weekend, I noticed that the poor plant on our floor was looking very . . . limp. I immediately thought, “Oh, they must have forgotten to water it over the weekend.” I immediately poured a bit of water into the dying plant, feeling good that I had helped save our living Christmas symbol.
Growing up, my family used to begin family home evening with a song, proceed to fight about our schedules for the upcoming week for 20 minutes, and then close with a prayer. We never quite caught the vision of the weekly night that LDS Church leaders encourage families to spend together.
More than 7,000 miles and the world’s largest ocean separate Astrid S. Tuminez’s birthplace in the Philippines from her adopted home of Orem, Utah. But mere geography can’t aptly describe the massive distance this Latter-day Saint convert has traveled.
