It’s a quiet day in the hospital. My footsteps echo down the cold, clean corridor. I pass the gift shop and notice red and green tinsel decorations signifying the season of celebration and light. As a chaplain, I witness people grieve, love, heal, and die. How to wrestle with the reality of the body’s fragility – of the body’s inevitable date with death – at a time when so much of the world celebrates a joyful birth? The juxtaposition between the lights of communal cheer and each individual patient’s pain weighs heavy.
War, violence, political debates that turn into personal attacks, skateboarding cats, the latest funny video. News today. It's eclectic, but in the vast mix of viral stories and current events, you hardly hear or see people sharing their faith in God.

It was no surprise when my husband and I attended our first family ward together as a young newlywed couple that we immediately landed in Primary. That seems to be the lot of many couples in our situation. Being the youngest in my family, however, it was quite the shock getting thrust into a room full of 5-year-old boys and having the responsibility of teaching them all about their eternal identity, their relationship to the Savior, and the plan of salvation. Even more surprising were the comments and unexpected complications that came with the calling. Don't get me wrong, it's been an exciting adventure. But it has been an adjustment.
