President Russell M. Nelson has been across the world during during his ministry as prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Since his call in January 2018, he has visited 32 countries and territories. In the past 12 months alone, the prophet completed ministry visits in South America, Central America, the Pacific, and Southeast Asia. He has also mourned with and counseled Latter-day Saints across the United States, met with dignitaries, religious organizations, charities, and civic groups, and made a historic visit to Rome, Italy, to dedicate the temple.
The next two weeks of Come, Follow Me focus on Matthew 16–17, Mark 8–9, and Luke 9. In Matthew 16:13-17, Christ asks His followers, "Whom say ye that I am?" The answer to this question varies based on the revelation we have received of Christ's divine identity. Receiving revelation often begins with asking questions, and in preparation for the revelations that are to come this general conference, we have provided a family home evening activity focused on asking questions and finding answers. With the passing of our beloved prophet, we wanted to remember the uplifting and eloquent words he shared that inspire us to be better, to reach higher, and to live our lives with more optimism.
For my part, I figured that a) since Mormonism was going to be in the news quite a bit; b) since my job is to cover religion journalism; and c) since I am nobody’s idea of a saint, Latter-day or otherwise; it would be a good idea to grab some firsthand experience with the religion. So one Sunday, unannounced and with notebook in hand and caffeine coursing through my veins, I showed up at the local Mormon ward and occupied a pew. It was a novelty for both of us it seemed—the congregation and me. I had never seen Mormons at worship and they had never had a bona fide journalist plop down and start taking notes.
