The songs in “Shine” are anything but traditional as the album reimagines old-time favorite Primary songs in a variety of styles, including gospel, jazz, R&B, neo-soul, reggae, and Atlanta hip hop.

All my life I have been taught to accept Church callings, knowing that despite my inadequacies, with the Lord’s help I could do my best. However, in September 2009, the bishop of our ward came over to our home for what my husband and I assumed was a friendly, get-to-know-you-better kind of visit. We were both completely stunned when he asked me, at age seventy-eight, to be the Primary president in the Bloomington Seventh Ward. My first response was, “Bishop, what are you thinking?” Why the surprise? My age aside, I informed him that I don’t see very well, I don’t hear very well, and I certainly don’t breathe as well as I did when I was younger. The bishop explained to me that as he reflected upon a new Primary president, my name kept coming to his mind. Although he tried to dismiss the feeling, after praying about the matter, he still felt impressed to call me. He even went to the temple to pray about who should be Primary president, and the impression continued that I should be called to this position. And so when he came to my home and offered his explanation as to why I was being called, I knew I could not say no. Could you say no, with such an explanation? Of course, when I told my daughter about the conversation, she said, “But did you tell him that you can’t sing?”

As my children grew into adulthood, my worry seemed to grow with them. Then I came across a revelatory line in a recent talk that changed me.

The three Nephites—few in the Church have not heard about these translated beings. Like the apostle John, these three disciples of Christ chose to "live to behold all the doings of the Father unto the children of men" (3 Nephi 28:7), meaning they are translated beings who will live on the earth until the Second Coming.

This hymn by Janice Kapp Perry came in first place with 709 votes. But it isn’t the first time it’s won a contest. When Sister Perry wrote it for a song contest in 1980, it won first place! It was the first counter-melody song (two separate melodies overlayed with each other) that she wrote, but it wouldn’t be the last. She went on to write other beloved songs like “A Child’s Prayer” and “We’ll Bring the World His Truth.”

I spend a lot of time on the computer, and I do all right until I have to figure out how the machine was put together and what makes it work. The truth is, I can’t tell a hard drive from a happy meal. When I have to install stuff or hook up stuff or figure out stuff, I find myself in serious distress. But there are those for whom the whole process is simple. Fortunately, two of them are my sons. I don’t use my brain to make computers work; I use it to remember the phone numbers of people who know how to make computers work.
