Yesterday, after our prophetPresident Russell M. Nelson announced new guidelines for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its members regarding how we should refer to ourselves and our church—including to avoid the use of the word Mormon and Mormonism—Twitter blew up. Here are a few of the best reactions:

One is the centrality and importance of a temple in almost every culture. Another is humankind’s relentless quest to come into contact with the divine—to enjoy communion with the gods who are worshiped and honored in temples. This desire to commune with deity in special sanctuaries is as old as Western civilization itself. The Joseph Smith Papers Project is a collection of primary Joseph Smith documents that is invaluable to American history scholars, Mormon history scholars, and of importance to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The latest volume, Histories, Volume 1: Joseph Smith Histories, 1832–1844 (Church Historian’s Press, $54.95), contains a number of highly readable and compelling historical narratives, some familiar to Latter-day Saints and historians, and some not well-known. The much-anticipated volume will be available March 19 at Deseret Book and select other retailers. Highlights from the volume include accounts of Joseph Smith’s earliest heavenly manifestations, the coming forth of the Book of Mormon, the organization of the church, the conferral of priesthood authority, the events leading up to Joseph Smith’s imprisonment in Missouri, and other events from early Latter-day Saint history.

There are approximately 16 million members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As President Russell M. Nelson and his wife, Sister Wendy Nelson, visit Southeast Asia over the next week, they are visiting countries where just 30,000 Latter-day Saints live. President Nelson calls these countries a “vibrant corner of the world, one that has seen plenty of strife through the years but also a region filled with valiant, resilient, determined souls.”

The name “Bradley R. Wilcox” may have sounded familiar to many Latter-day Saints when he was announced as a member of the new Young Men general presidency in general conference, and rightly so. Brother Wilcox is widely known for his work at BYU and as a speaker and an author. President Steven J. Lund and Brother Ahmad S. Corbitt, however, are newer names to most Latter-day Saints.
