As we begin gearing up for general conference, we will be highlighting past conference talks to help us review, remember, and grow closer to the Spirit so that we can better recognize the Lord's voice and direction this coming October. This talk was given by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland in October 2008. (Read the full talk here.) After discussing the myriad ways heavenly angels minister to us in mortality, Elder Holland shared this touching story:
One of the greatest blessings as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is to know without a doubt the key to lasting happiness. Even though we might worry from time to time or feel unsure about what the future holds we can know and we can feel the peace that comes from living righteously.
This winter, one of our favorite reads comes to us from noted LDS figure Sheri Dew: Women and the Priesthood. Her book was so good, we simply had to share it with some of our friends. (You might know them, too: Emily Freeman, Fiona Givens, Brad Wilcox, and lots of our favorite LDS writers.) We asked each one to check out a chapter of this amazing book and write us back with their thoughts. And so straight from their pens to your eyes, we bring you their reflective and sincere responses:
Three years ago the Coromandel family moved deep into the Australian Outback—900 miles deep. The small country town of Winton, 900 miles west of Brisbane, became home to Kristy, Leon, and their 15-month-old daughter, Rachel, so that Leon could begin his career as a high school teacher.
This performance of the hula by sister missionaries is sure to uplift you and help you feel the Spirit.
Among the most laughably improbable prophecies recorded by the Prophet Joseph Smith is Moroni’s prediction that, in the Prophet’s words, “My name should be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues, or that it should be both good and evil spoken of among all people” (see Joseph Smith-History 1:33).
I’m a little picky when it comes to worship music. Now, don’t get me wrong. I can appreciate the hymns and the Tabernacle Choir as much as the next person, but there’s something about a good beat and a catchy melody that I gravitate to. Let’s be honest, though—songs that fit that description and that have inspirational lyrics can sometimes be hard to come by.
Everyone has a story, a need, a lack, a place of inadequacy. I know the details of mine, and you know the details of yours. And the Lord? He knows about every story, and every dark place, and every hope and heartache and happily ever after.
I, Mary Goble, was born in Brighton, Sussex, England, June 2, 1843. My father was William Goble, son of William and Harriet Johnson Goble. My mother was the daughter of John and Sarah Penfold. My childhood days were spent the same as most children[’s]. When I was in my twelfth year, my parents joined the Latter-Day Saints. On November the 5th I was baptized. The following May we started for Utah. We left our home May 19, 1856.
