At the 68th Annual Religion News Association Convention in Nashville Tennessee, Faith Counts announced the second annual “Film Your Faith” winner on September 8, 2017.

The brevity of the Articles of Faith sometimes causes us to overlook their significance. How miraculous is it that doctrines as rich and complex as those found within our Church can be summed up in one, over-arching series of statements easy enough for Primary children to memorize?

Faith Counts, an interfaith coalition that promotes the value of faith in society and includes The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is holding a video contest where the grand prize winner will receive $20,000. The fan favorite will receive $10,000 and the honorable mention will receive $2,500.

Early in my career as a psychologist, I worked with a client who suffered from depression. Knowing that depression is primarily fueled by inaccurate, negative thoughts, I set out to help him change his thinking. Each week he would come in with a very pessimistic view of life. I’d tell him to try to focus on the positive. One particular time, he responded by providing a long list of negatives in the world, including widespread poverty, school shootings, dread health crises, pollution, domestic violence, hatred, ethnic genocide, social inequality, etc. He said, “How can I focus on the positive when there is so much negative all around us?” His answer gave me pause. I didn’t know how to respond. Was he actually correct? Were my attempts to get him to “think positive” simply a naïve overlooking of all the drama, death, and injustice that seem to plague the world every day?

Faith, as a principle of power, is one of the most amazing parts of our relationship with God. He is able to measure the amount of faith a person has, and based on that amount or quality, He is able to bring to pass events that can only be described as miracles.
