One of the journalism classes that I am currently enrolled in at Utah Valley University is a course that studies the Church, its members, the culture within the Church, and how those outside of the Church view the faith and its members. I have learned many things over the course of the last few months in this class and I will admit it has challenged me to think more deeply about my faith.
My wife’s ancestors Parshall and Hannah Terry lived in Palmyra, New York, and knew the Prophet Joseph Smith. Their son Jacob was the exact same age as Joseph and was his schoolmate and friend. In 1817, three years before the First Vision, the Terry family moved from New York to Canada and lost contact with the Smiths until 1837, when missionaries taught them. The family was amazed to learn about all that had transpired with the Smith family. The Terrys were baptized the following year and moved to Missouri, anxious to reconnect with their friends the Smiths. Instead, they got there just in time to be expelled from the state because of the extermination order.
A newlywed couple was discussing comfort food. The bride said, “My family loves Shepherd’s Pie.” The groom had never heard of that. He said, “One of my family’s favorites is Hamburger Bean Casserole.” The wife scrunched up her nose and responded, “I don’t think I would like that.” Little did they know that they were using different names for the exact same dish. How sad it would be if the couple began to argue about whose family’s comfort food was best!
In October 2018, it was my first general conference working for the Church News. As their web producer, I helped make talk summaries from the speakers go live in real time on our website. This could be both stressful and exciting—there are a lot of moving parts and long hours, but it was also rewarding being part of a dedicated team helping to make conference accessible to people everywhere.
After two years of postponements, the exciting new Church-hosted youth conferences are back in full swing this summer!
“In one way or another, divorce touches most families in the church,” said President Oaks, and isn’t that the hard truth?
This story originally ran in LDS Living in 2005. Mario Facione passed away in 2015. Here is his story.
Those of us who are actively involved in the gospel of Christ have become accustomed to its demands. We direct music, give talks, run whole organizations with secretaries and counselors. We volunteer countless hours in service, clean our church houses, and willingly pay tithes and offerings regularly. Can you name any other organization on earth that requires so much of its members? I can’t name one.
There are certain roadblocks or barriers to communion with the Infinite, things that get in the way and prevent us from enjoying the kind of closeness with our Heavenly Father that we could have. We all could volunteer examples of such roadblocks. Let me suggest but a few.
