The Cordoba Argentina temple became the 145th operating temple this weekend after being dedicated in three sessions by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf.
‘Spiritual’ is not a characteristic one would think of to describe a football player and his coach on a Division One national college team. Yet ‘spiritual’ is the word that popped into my head as I sat in the audience of the devotional given by the BYU football team Friday, October 18th prior to their game against the University of Houston the next day. These brawny young men walked into the chapel with the confidence of gladiators, but at the same time had the humility of true disciples of Jesus Christ. I was impressed with their clean-cut appearance with matching tan pants and navy blazers sporting BYU’s ‘Y’ logo patch. For the opening hymn, it was an amazing site to hear them sing “Onward Christian Soldiers” as that is exactly what I envisioned them to be.
Some remembered the wicked wind, some the brackish water, others the hardships of the trail. Winters were cold, the spring air filled with sand, wagon covers flapped relentlessly and floodwaters blew out one dam after another as Mormon settlers struggled to raise crops along the Little Colorado River in eastern Arizona Territory. Among the early settlers was William Jordan Flake. In 1878, he rode out to explore the region on horseback. He traveled hundreds of miles into New Mexico Territory and back to an area north of present-day Show Low, where he found a little valley along Silver Creek, a tributary of the Little Colorado. The stream ran through hills of piñon, juniper, sage, saltbush and blue grama. A rancher, James Stinson, already had settled there. Flake bought Stinson's ranch for $11,000 worth of Utah-grade cattle.
With the presidential race in full swing, immigration reform has been a popular and controversial topic. But one congressman has decided to pull the LDS Church into the debate, and he mischaracterized the Church's stance on immigration in doing so.
President Boyd K. Packer said Preach My Gospel was “designed beyond the veil and put together here.” This inspired manual continues to bless my life today. As a father, husband, and professional, I frequently rely and reflect on lessons learned from the manual.
The Conference Center has 21,000 seats; they will be filled five times between the 4th and 5th of October 2014 for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ semiannual general conference. More than 100,000 people will experience the worldwide conference from inside the Conference Center — many for the very first time.
The story of Hanukkah is also a story of our heritage that tells about the protection and dedication of something Mormons hold dear, a temple.
One of the oddly lovable aspects of the circus is the way they can incorporate any figure from fairy tale or myth into their grand parade and have the audience accept it enthusiastically. When I worked as a beginning clown with the Ringling Brothers Blue Unit in 1972, we had Santa Claus atop an elephant, riding jovially around the arena waving with mittened hand at the crowd during the hottest July anyone could remember. No one seemed to think this at all strange, or out of season. Santa with the circus? Where else would the old gentleman spend his summers? Santa was played by a paunchy Bulgarian acrobat. He had no idea who Santa was, so when he was asked by the show's director to exhibit some hearty holiday spirit he could think of nothing better to do than to bellow "Hello dere!" to all the excited children.
"What brings hope is that once the priesthood is there, once the Lord has his hand blessing the people, it won't take long for good things to happen," Jorge Mena says about the Church in Cuba.
