While we as members of the Church are familiar with the yellow Mormon Helping Hands vests, we also recognize that Mormons are not the only group of people working to make the world a better place. In fact, a brighter world is born in reaching across boundaries and working with those of other beliefs and backgrounds to champion the greater good.
Oftentimes the biggest challenge you'll face on your mission isn't the missionary work or the early mornings or the tough schedules. It's something much more common and difficult to overcome.
Thank goodness that the Mormon Moment has finally come to an end. It’s been six months—a year, maybe—and what with all the Broadway musicals, billboards and radio ads, magazine spreads, the op-eds and the letters responding to the op-eds, the television news stories, the daytime pundits, the night-time pundits, the op-eds responding to the pundits and the letters excoriating the op-ed responses to the pundits, this Mormon is exhausted. Now that the country has voted the highest Mormon in the land back to Boston or Wolfeboro or wherever, I’m looking forward to a well-earned break from the country’s daily construction of my identity.
The location of a new temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Auckland, New Zealand, has been announced by President Russell M. Nelson during a Tuesday evening devotional in the country’s largest city. “Today I am pleased to announce that the new temple will be built in Auckland on Redoubt Road," said President Nelson. The temple will be on a hill between the Missionary Training Center and the Redoubt stake center. President Nelson said the temple will be a '"two-story building with a granite exterior. Its light and beauty will be highly visible."
The temple in Springfield, Oregon, is the third in the state and the 219th dedicated temple in operation worldwide.
University of Utah researchers didn't have to go far to find an ideal subject to study for research on how voice changes with age. They chose the late Gordon B. Hinckley, the 15th president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Hinckley was optimal to study because he had very few health problems and because there was a large volume of recorded speeches, lead researcher Eric Hunter told KSL
Many of you don’t know that in my real life I am a hairstylist. Over the last 16 years I have been helping to beautify the women and men in Utah one highlight, relaxer or haircut at a time. Everyone knows that stylist aren't just people who provide hair care. We are the people that you confess your sins or someone else's sins too. We provide you with advice and sometimes it's actually beneficial to you and your loved ones. What I'm really trying to say is having your hair done at my salon was an experience that most of the people that I have come in contact with seemed to enjoy. In urban communities the church (no, not the Mormon church) and salon are main sources of information and news.
Fun
Temples are especially significant to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They are considered houses of God where Church members make sacred covenants with Heavenly Father and learn more about the mission of Jesus Christ.
Last week you may have caught the first video of a new video series by Gospel Day by Day and LDS Living. In case you missed it, the series launched with the first of three videos featuring Jared Halverson, an Institute of Religion teacher who is currently completing a doctorate in American religious history from Vanderbilt University, focusing on anti-religious rhetoric.
A fluke complication claimed his leg, but the amputation only drove Gary Weiland to greater heights of athleticism.
