On Wednesday, August 22 and Thursday, August 23 “World News with Diane Sawyer” aired a two-part report “Inside the Mormon Church” from ABC’s Dan Harris. In introducing the series Diane Sawyer said — “It’s a time of change in America. In the last 12 years alone we have seen the election of the first black President, the first Jewish candidate on a major ticket — Senator Joe Lieberman, and next week, another breakthrough – the first Mormon nominee for President, a profound and historic moment for the Mormon faith, which is a still a mystery to a lot of people. So tonight, Dan Harris begins a two-part series, answering questions about this uniquely American religion.”
LDS Church involvement in religious liberty issues extends to the earliest days of the history of the church, when Latter-day Saints experienced firsthand the harshness of religious persecution. Church founder Joseph Smith said in 1843 that "if it has been demonstrated that I have been willing to die for a Mormon, I am bold to declare before Heaven that I am just as ready to die in defending the rights of a Presbyterian, a Baptist, or a good man of any other denomination; for the same principle which would trample upon the rights of the Latter-day Saints would trample upon the rights of the Roman Catholics, or of any other denomination, who may be unpopular and too weak to defend themselves."

The Pioneer Day Concert 2014, “A Summer Celebration of Song” debuts tonight and continues tomorrow. Tickets for the two performances are distributed but you can still be a part of the concert featuring Broadway and film star Santino Fontana. Standby seating will be available both Friday and Saturday. Hundreds of standbys are usually seated at Choir concerts and patrons are encouraged to come. The standby line forms at the North Gate of Temple Square at 6 p.m. The Choir will be broadcasting the concert on Saturday on its website—MoTab.org/PioneerDay—and BYUtv will air the program that night as well. Both are at 8 p.m. Mountain time. (BYUtv will also reair the concert on July 24 at 7 p.m., 10 p.m. and 1 a.m.)
