In the following excerpt from To Become Like God: Witnesses to Our Divine Potential,LDS scholar Andrew C. Skinner explains how the meaning of Elohim supports one of Mormonism's most cherished doctrines.
Since there were three gifts given to the Christ child, we naturally assume there were three wise men. However some academics believe this wasn't the case. Here's what we know about the magi.
As part of the Saturday evening session of general conference, President Russell M. Nelson announced a second worldwide fast and unveiled a new symbol for the Church.
Recently, I underwent a project to satisfy my personal curiosity: discovering what words were used the most during last year's general conference. I thought that if I looked at the text from a new perspective and if I really analyzed the words that were spoken, maybe new messages would somehow reveal themselves to me. Maybe I would find some deeper, surprising message that our Church leaders were trying to communicate.

Until a few years ago, Elder Dairong Li didn't believe there was a life after this one. “We just believe life is life. You live and then you go," he shared with triblive.com. But that all changed when Li and his mother met with Mormon missionaries.

As someone who has been observing the development of the curriculum for the Children and Youth program, I have been impressed with its focus on transitioning children into responsible adults. I believe all parents want to see their children evolve into responsible adults, though there are as many varied opinions as there are parents on how best to accomplish that goal. Achieving the goal of transitioning youth into adults appears further complicated by the fact that children with different personalities may actually require a parenting approach tailored to their unique strengths and weaknesses. Sister Joy D. Jones, Primary general president shares, “Leaders and parents, keep in mind that you help children and youth best when you support their efforts instead of tracking them.” It’s my hope that all parents will be able to see how the new program encourages children to take personal responsibility for their development and can be easily adapted to the specific needs of each individual child.
There is a phrase in 2 Nephi 25:23 that Latter-day Saints are likely very familiar with, “For we know that it is by grace that we are saved after all we can do.” But what does that mean? What is all we can do? Is Nephi telling us we need to do more than we are doing or is he simply saying to do your best? And what is grace, this thing that is supposed to save us, anyway?
Here in Kinshasa the church is doing a new pilot program for developing nations. It's the first one of its kind and is probably the last big thing done by Bishop Burton before he was released. He was very anxious about the lack of employment in the Congo and this was the idea that they came up with to help that problem. PEF is in Kinshasa, and is wonderful. Our missionary couple, Staggs, have really worked to get it started here in the Congo. It's a good program and many are benefiting from it. But it's very hard to get a job even after you go to school. There are fewer jobs than people looking for work, even for those who are trained. So another alternative will be a great blessing too. This new program is addressing the problem in a completely different direction.
