The Saints arrived in Ohio to build their Zion community, and this effort took hard work. They needed to build homes, shops, and a temple while also building trust in each other. In Doctrine and Covenants 41–44, we learn about the new law their community would live under and how much was required to live up to it.

Segment 2

Scriptures:
D&C 38:32 (Introduction to God’s Law)
D&C 41:3-5, D&C 42:2 (Receiving the law)
2 Nephi 2:13 (Consequences of having laws)
D&C 26:2, D&C 28:13 (Common Consent)
D&C 41:2 (Agree on the word)

Study Helps:
The principle whereby Church members sustain those called to serve in the Church, as well as other Church decisions requiring their support, usually shown by raising the right hand. (Common Consent, Guide to the Scriptures)

The Law of Consecration is God’s way of teaching us to love Him and love each other. (Steven Harper, The Law of Consecration, Church Media Library)

Segment 3

Scriptures:
D&C 41:1,2, D&C 42:1,2, D&C 43:1,15,17,23,34 (Hearken and hear)
D&C 41:9-11 (Edward Partridge called as a bishop)

Words of the General Authorities:
The very first word in the Doctrine and Covenants is hearken. It means “to listen with the intent to obey.” To hearken means to “hear Him”—to hear what the Savior says and then to heed His counsel. In those two words—“Hear Him”—God gives us the pattern for success, happiness, and joy in this life. We are to hear the words of the Lord, hearken to them, and heed what He has told us!
*footnote 13: In the Old Testament, the word hearken is translated from the Hebrew shama, which is a strong verb that means to “listen with the intent to obey.” Hearken is a scriptural word that occurs in 40 sections of the Doctrine and Covenants. (Russell M. Nelson, “Hear Him”, April 2020 General Conference)

Segment 4

Scriptures:
D&C 42:1-17 (General instruction)
D&C 42:18-29 (Commandments)
D&C 42:30-42 (Law of Consecration)
D&C 42:43-52 (Blessing the sick)
D&C 42:48 (Faith to be healed)
D&C 42:78-87 (Law of church vs. law of land)
D&C 42:32-33 (Stewardship)

Words of the General Authorities:
I thought I prayed all the time, more or less. But the lesson was, ‘Pray more than you pray.’ However much you’ve prayed, pray more. And in however many places you’ve prayed, pray in more places. However many times during the day you pray, pray more times in the day. And it started to give meaning to me, an overwhelming meaning to me that … it was quite literal when God had said, ‘pray always.’ (Jeffrey R. Holland, Family Discovery Day Live Session, RootsTech 2025)

Study Helps:
The Saints considered the revelation found in Doctrine and Covenants 42:1–72 to be one of the most important the Prophet had received. It was one of the first revelations to be published. For many years, the Saints called it simply “the law.” (Come, Follow Me—For Home and Church: Doctrine and Covenants 2025, “My Law to Govern My Church”)

Within the Law of Consecration is agency, accountability and stewardship. (Steven Harper, Let’s Talk about the Law of Consecration)

Segment 5

Scriptures:
D&C 42:30-31,34 (Give to the poor)
D&C 42:38-39 (Unto the least)
D&C 44:6 (Visiting the poor and needy)
D&C 11:12-14 (Doing righteousness is the Spirit)
D&C 43:30-33 (The great Millennium)

Study Helps:
Soon after the foregoing revelation [D&C 42] was received, a woman came making great pretensions of re-revealing commandments, laws and other curious matters; and as almost every person has advocates for both theory and practice, in the various notions and projects of the age, it became necessary to inquire of the Lord, when I received the following [D&C 43] (History of the Church 1:154)

Segment 6

Scriptures:
D&C 43:1-7 (The prophet holds the keys)
D&C 43:8-9 (The law binds)
D&C 43: 9,11,16 (Sanctify yourselves)

Translations:
Sanctify - Kodesh = Set apart for something holy
