On Father’s Day this year, the women of a ward in Saratoga Springs, Utah, coordinated the ultimate dad joke.
After years of seeing videos on social media of families and friends pranking each other with matching clothes, Paige Anderberg Sosa had an idea: matching ties for the men at church.
“I sent out some … group texts and also had our Relief Society secretary send an email to all the women in the ward,” Paige explains.
Those who wanted to participate paid Paige for a tie. After ordering a bunch, she put the ties in brown paper bags and discreetly dropped one off at each household that had opted to join in. The wives and children then gifted the ties to the men on Father’s Day morning at home.
“Some men opened the gift and put on the tie [for church], no problem,” Paige says. “Others had more resistance because they had a tradition to wear a [certain] tie each year for Father’s Day. But, luckily, the women were very convincing and managed to get their husbands to put on the tie.”
A Bonding Moment for the Men
When Sunday came around, the women could hardly contain their excitement.
“Walking into church and making eye contact with other women as we tried to not burst out laughing was … hilarious,” Paige says. “Not only were we able to keep it a secret, but it turned out to be a massive success.”
Around 60 men in the ward entered the chapel that day wearing the exact same tie. Paige says it was a moment that created unity and bonding for men of all ages.
“The older generation loved it and couldn’t stop laughing,” she says. “The younger fathers couldn’t believe their wives actually pulled it off. Most men in our ward are pranksters themselves, so it was fun to finally get them back.”
Even the men who didn’t participate enjoyed seeing the reactions as everyone walked into church. Some women knew they’d be out of town for Father’s Day and still purchased ties for their husbands.
“[This is] definitely something we’ll be talking and laughing about for a long time,” Paige says. “I’m so glad we made this happen!”
Ward member Rachel Urry caught the reactions of the men on camera. Watch the video below.
