In his new book, A Better Heart , Christofferson explores Christlike love in greater depth, but in both books there is one standout character: his mother. What might surprise you is the Oreo cookie he keeps on his desk. He explained that several years ago while visiting a refugee camp in Greece he met, a...

Emily Abel - Choosing when to receive the endowment is an important and personal decision in the lives of Latter-day Saints. A new addition to the Church’s General Handbook offers guidance for members—and their church leaders—on making this decision. The handbook states, “The decision to receive the endowment is personal and should be made prayerfully” ( see section 27.2.2 ). The following conditions are listed for members who wish to receive the endowment:   • “They are at least 18 years old.”   • “They have completed or are no longer attending high school, secondary school, or the equivalent.”  • “One full year has...

A member's perfect response when a woman said she didn't think much of the Church because women ‘aren't allowed to participate’

Sheri Dew, adapted from “Women and the Priesthood” - This excerpt adapted from  Women and the Priesthood originally ran on  LDS Living in  March 2018.  Some time ago I was introduced to an accomplished woman of another faith—bright, articulate, generally well-informed about the issues of the day—whom I liked instantly. As we were getting acquainted, she said, “I have to tell you that I don’t think much of your church.” “Really?” I responded. “Tell me why.” Her answer was straightforward: “Because women in your church aren’t allowed to participate.” I tried to keep a straight face but couldn’t and started to laugh. She looked puzzled and asked what was so...

The doors we walk through (A reflection on 2020)

Emily Abel - We saw a lot of doors close in 2020—the doors to our homes, our churches, our schools. And as the months passed, many people watched their doors to opportunity swing soundly shut, often taking their optimism with it.  Maybe now has never been a better time to learn to be, as Ralph Waldo Emerson suggested, “an opener of doors.” And the first step, I think, to following Mr. Emerson’s instruction is to believe that there are doors of opportunity available to all of us. I hope you’ll let me convince you into believing that, too. A Cold March Morning To begin,...

The Book of Mormon got a mention on Sunday Night Football; We’re still not sure why

LDS Living - In the middle of the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers playoff matchup Sunday night, Sunday Night Football announcer Al Michaels randomly referenced the Book of Mormon . We would love to explain the reference, but the mention came out of left field, to mix sport idioms, and involved a controversial call by the Pittsburgh Steelers coaching staff.  Here’s Al Michaels dropping “Book of Mormon” on a SNF Playoff game.
