Lesson

The eighth Article of Faith states, “We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.” As the prophet of the Restoration, Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon is another testament, or witness, of Jesus Christ. It is scripture, just like the Bible. Many people believe that when Jesus was on the earth, He only ministered to the people in Jerusalem. But the Book of Mormon teaches that Jesus loves all people and visited the Nephites in America. The Book of Mormon doesn’t replace the Bible. The Bible is the word of God as well. When we study both the Bible and the Book of Mormon, we can more fully understand Jesus Christ’s teachings.

Discuss

How is the Book of Mormon another testament of Jesus Christ? Why isn’t the Bible enough?

Activity

All Ages, Option 1: As a family, read one of your children’s favorite Book of Mormon stories. Then have an older child (or a parent) and a younger child summarize the story in their own words. Most likely, the older child’s account will be more detailed. Explain to your children that their two summaries are similar to how we use the Book of Mormon and Bible. Each of the children’s versions contained important details, but it took two children to accurately tell the whole story. Discuss how the Book of Mormon complements the Bible.

All Ages, Option 2: Play “Book of Mormon Charades.” You can choose from the following scenes or come up with your own:

• Nephi obtains the brass plates

• Nephi builds a boat

• King Benjamin preaches from a tower

• Abinadi preaches to King Noah

• Alma the Younger repents

• Helaman leads the 2,000 stripling warriors into battle

• Moroni buries the gold plates

Challenge

As a family, read from the Book of Mormon each day this week. If you already do this, make your scripture study more challenging by memorizing a verse from one of the chapters you are studying this week.
