‘He has descended below it all so that He can lift us above it all’: Watch the Truman Brothers’ 5-Minute Fireside

In LDS Living’s latest 5-minute Fireside, two musicians take the floor to share a message about the Savior in both word and song. Chad and Ben Truman, singer-songwriters known as the Truman Brothers, tell how difficult it was for their family when their aunt passed away from brain cancer, just two months before the birth of her first granddaughter, and amid a worldwide pandemic that prevented many traditional forms grieving. Chad says that experience and other trials in the past year, have brought a line from Doctrine and Covenants 122:7 to his mind often:

If fierce winds become thine enemy; if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to hedge up the way; and above all, if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good (emphasis added).

“That line, ‘shall be for they good’ is quite a promise,” Chad says. “Because sometimes when we are in the middle of our stories, stuck in the chapter still with the deepest, darkest trials, it can feel impossible to believe that any good could come from such sorrow.”

But the brothers both testify that God can see the whole story of our lives—how times of sadness and trial will one day end.

“If we just keep reading, keep turning those pages, we will come to know this ultimate truth: He loves us and He has descended below it all so that He can lift us above it all,” Ben says.

The brothers then conclude their testimonies through music, performing their inspiring original song, “Before the Calm.” During the chorus Ben sings, “When the wind is raging, keep holding on, ‘cause it's just the storm before the calm."
