God Needs Mothers of All Kinds

The daughter of a prophet’s wife, a young woman who recently adopted her first child, and a stepmother of teenagers—these are just three “kinds” of mothers highlighted in this week's "All In" episode. You may know many other types of mothers. There are those who are unable to have children of their own, single women, grandmothers, birth mothers who give someone else the opportunity of motherhood through adoption, and mothers who share their children with a stepparent. The world is full of women who are actively involved in mothering—for as Sheri Dew famously said, “Are we not all mothers?”

10: “Thy Faith Hath Saved Thee” (Matthew 8, Mark 2-4, Luke 7)

The famed poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once penned the beautiful words, “Be still, sad heart! and cease repining; Behind the cloud is the sun still shining; Thy fate is a common fate of all, Into each life some rain must fall.” Longfellow is right—rain comes at different times to all of us. But his words also remind us that behind the clouds, the sun is always still shining. In this week’s lesson in Matthew 8, Mark 2–4, and Luke 7, we’ll read about when a tempest caught Jesus’s disciples unaware. And we’ll see that just as the physical sun always still shining, so too is the Son of God always there for us.

36: "For the Salvation of Zion" (Doctrine and Covenants 94–97)

“I love to see the temple. I’ll go inside someday.” For many Latter-day Saints, these lyrics from the Primary song “I Love to See the Temple” are familiar and meaningful. But the early Saints didn’t grow up singing that song; the idea of a temple and temple ordinances was mostly unfamiliar to them. So when the Lord commanded that they build His “house,” there was some hesitation. As we study this week’s lesson in Doctrine and Covenants 94–97, we will see how the Lord lovingly reproved the Saints and the instructions He gave to them that can enhance our temple worship today.
