Prioritize, Choose, and Neglect with Dr. Julie Valentine

Sometimes it can be hard to know how we can use our time and energy for good in the world, but Heavenly Father has given us the choice in how we can bless others around us. As we consider all our to-do lists and wanting to put our energy into every good thing around us, we must choose where to put our efforts and even consciously choose to neglect things we can let go of. In this episode, we are giving ourselves permission to restructure the to-do lists and find what will guide us to blessings ourselves and others around us.

An artist from a young age, Sarah Jane Wright doesn’t have many memories that don’t include having a pencil or a crayon in her hand, and that trend continues to this day. From her Nutcracker illustrations displayed in Ralph Lauren's New York City flagship store to her “Lola Dutch” picture book series series to her latest project with Emily Belle Freeman and David Butler, Sarah Jane is a believer that God made all of us creators. On this week’s episode, we talk about why creativity of all forms is often messy, and why it's worth cultivating in ourselves and in our children.

48: “He Delighteth in Mercy” (Jonah, Micah)

Sometimes we find the Old Testament relatable not because of the stories where people have everything figured out, but because of the stories where they don't. Like us, these individuals are imperfect—and occasionally, they might even have a bit of a rebellious streak. This week’s story is about one such prophet. Jonah sacrificed everything to go and do, but when he got his call to serve, he ran in the opposite direction. Eventually, though, he repented and served with his whole heart. Our study today is in the books of Jonah and Micah, where we learn the stories of normal people who answered the call to be prophets.

14: “Be Not Afraid” (Matthew 14; Mark 6; John 5–6)

Have you ever been given a nickname? Sometimes, those names are silly or just for fun. But other times, they can show an important part of our personality. They can even represent who we are to different friends. The Savior had many, many names He was known by during His ministry—Lamb of God, Healer, and Bread of Life are just a few of the terms we hear Christ being called in Matthew 14, Mark 6, and John 5–6. This week, we find out how we can deepen our relationship with Christ by coming to know Him in a new way as we learn the loving names He was called by His disciples.

Second, a chance to be taught by missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about her divine identity as a daughter of God. This powerful combination of secular and spiritual knowledge opened up a whole new world of possibilities for young Astrid. Today, President Tuminez leads Utah Valley University with the belief that education has the power to transform lives.

18: “I Am the Good Shepherd” (John 7–10)

The warm glow of a kitchen light after dark; a sturdy, solid door blocking a raging wind outside—two examples of comfort and protection that many of us can relate to. In this week’s lesson in John 7–10, we will study the many ways Christ can be our protection, including as a light and a door. We will also read how He is the Good Shepherd who again and again guides us safely back to the peace and rest of His fold.

Once upon a time ... just those four simple words have the power to bring back fond memories of story time as a child. Can’t you just imagine yourself listening to your parent or teacher and getting lost in the story while imagining yourself as the hero on a great quest? If you’ve ever tried to see yourself in a storybook, you’re going to love this week’s Come, Follow Me study of Luke 12–17 and John 11. These chapters are filled with familiar parables that we can just as easily find ourselves in and learn an important lesson from at the end.

20: “What Lack I Yet?” (Matthew 19–20; Mark 10; Luke 18)

What if you had the chance to ask Jesus anything? Not in the next life, or someday in the future, but today? What would your question be? Would His answer resolve a concern or confirm a truth—or both? Matthew 19–20, Mark 10, and Luke 18 contain stories of people who had the opportunity to ask Jesus questions. In this week's study, we'll examine those questions, and apply Jesus's answers, to our own lives.
