Some families in Utah Saturday were still anxiously awaiting word about their loved ones who were in the Philippines when Typhoon Haiyan hit the country Friday. A Tooele family has a daughter serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints near the city of Tacloban — the area hardest hit by the storm — and as of Saturday afternoon she and dozens of other missionaries remained unaccounted for.
Dancing with the Stars has upped the ante this year by including the Empress of Soul, Gladys Knight, as a contestant on their fourteenth season. The seven-time Grammy winner is sure to wow audiences just like she has done on the stage for over 40 years. The vocalist is known for classic soul tracks like "If I Were Your Woman," "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)," and "Midnight Train to Georgia." In addition, she is BET royalty, receiving the Best Living Legend honoree at the 2008 BET Awards. In an in-depth interview, a jovial Mrs. Knight talked about everything from Dancing with the Stars to Mitt Romney to Tina Turner to the late, great Whitney Houston.
The LDS Church has 15 million members around the world. By comparison, there are 1.2 billion Catholics, according to the Vatican. The Pew Research Center says there are 1.6 billion Muslims.
At a time when concerns about family finances are widely believed to be a leading cause of marital discord and divorce, our efforts to manage our finances wisely are perhaps more important than ever. During my adult life in the Church, I have observed a number of common financial mistakes individuals and families make that, if avoided, will lead to greater peace and financial security. Below, I summarize seven of these mistakes:
This week's issue of the LDS Church News features a list of the 2013 mission president assignments. The list includes 58 new missions, raising the number of missions from 347 to 405.Following President Thomas S. Monson's announcement during the opening session of the October 2012 general conference that the age for missionary service eligibility would be lowered to 18 for young men and 19 for young women, the church saw an immediate increase in missionary applications, bringing the total number of missionaries to more than 60,000 for the first time in years, according to the Church News.
Filmed in a sandy, barren landscape, Alex Boyé's cover of "Location" by Khalid is a music video with a unique flare, but it was not easy to film.
With so much in our society that draws us apart—with all the online debating, the differences, and even the hatred that divides us, this counsel from President Gordon B. Hinckley is something everyone should strive to make a reality in their life today:
This Mother's Day, the Church is challenging everyone to make a mother's day happy.
As a musician, I spend my days promoting my music and my videos, but nothing comes close to the feeling you get when you’re promoting your faith. I was sitting in Sunday School of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints a few years ago when the ward mission leader walked into class with a stern look on his face. He had a box full of copies of the Book of Mormon and he gave one to each of us, challenging us to give it away this week and come back next week with a report of whom we gave it to.
The Latter-day Saint practice of vicarious baptism on behalf of the dead is once again a focus of controversy. In the past few weeks, it's been portrayed in the news media and on the web as unbiblical, ghoulish, bizarre, shameful, vicious, anti-Semitic, immoral, hateful, an exercise in "black magic" and (by some extremists) possibly even illegal. A national television commentator recently named President Thomas S. Monson among "the worst people in the world" for presiding over the practice. It's high time for the view of a very respected non-Mormon scholar to be heard above the noise.
